A SECONDARY school teacher has won a national accolade.

Will Emeny, mathematics curriculum leader at Wyvern College, Fair Oak, beat off thousands of nominations to win a Silver Teaching Award.

His nomination will now go forward for the National Teaching Award for Secondary Teacher of the Year 2016 to be announced at a televised ceremony in London in October.

When the judges visited the college they observed him teach and met Alan Newton, head teacher, other teachers, students, parents and governors to discover for themselves that Mr Emeny is first and foremost an inspirational teacher.

In addition Will is an excellent curriculum leader, an exceptional member of staff, and he has already gained national recognition for his work in mathematics and is in demand to talk to mathematics teachers throughout the UK and beyond.

Will has developed a numeracy programme (numeracy Ninjas) based on extensive research and it has been made available to schools and colleges worldwide.

The programme has gone viral in the mathematics world and is being used by thousands of students. The programme is free because Mr Emeny believes that every child should have the opportunity to become a mathematician regardless of the school’s ability to afford this valuable resource.

On Friday June 19 – Thank a Teacher Day – the award was presented to Mr Emeny in a unique governors’ assembly.
