HARRY Potter, Gregg Heffley, The Tiger Who Came To Tea – they’re just some of the characters you might see walking to school today for World Book Day 2017.

Now in its 20th year, the event has grown in popularity with children and adults all over the world dressing up as their favourite characters to show their love of their favourite books.

And schools across Hampshire will be taking part with activities throughout the day.

Designing comic books, running quizzes, taking ‘shelfies,’ (pictures of your bookcase) and of course enjoying the simple pleasure of reading together and alone are just some of the plans for this year – all with the aim of celebrating our love of books.

Dinner ladies at one school have even devised a Harry Potter themed lunch and will be serving Hogwarts Chicken with snitch roast potatoes.

Head cook at St Mark’s in Freemantle Laura Suanez-Aisa will be donning her finest Hogwarts costume to demonstrate her love for the reading while staff at Scrivens opticians in Shirley will be riding the magic elevator as homage to Roald Dahl – and selling second hand books to raise money for Alzheimer’s UK.
