School move at least five years away

THE move of a Hampshire secondary school to a greenfield site will not happen for at least five years, says its head teacher.

Perins School in Alresford has been considering selling its current site in the centre of the town and moving to farmland off Sun Lane.

Head teacher Janice Bernard said that the idea of moving the school to land east of Sun Lane was attractive but that the governors were a long way from putting up a for sale' sign and inviting bids for the Pound Hill site.

It would free prime housing land and provide education bosses with the opportunity for a purpose-built school.

Mrs Bernard said: "I think it's a very interesting idea and the governors are going to look at it and study it in detail.

"We've set up a working group to hopefully include the junior and infant schools, but we're not jumping either way at the moment.

"The thought of a new school is lovely but there are other things we need to think about, like the impact on the town and the interim arrangements."
