Southampton professor calls for decisions to be made on climate change

A SOUTHAMPTON professor has warned that the uncertainty over the scale of climate change is causing a delay for any action to be taken to try and tackle the problem.
Prof. Robert Nicholls, from the University of Southampton argues that badly needed action must be taken as soon as possible, such as upgrading infrastructure, installing early-warning systems, and effective organisations, as well as the costs of reducing risk, such as not building on flood plains.
Professor Nicholls said: “Some impacts of climate change are now inevitable, so it is widely agreed that we must adapt. But selecting and funding adaptation remains a challenge.”
Along with his co-authors of the research article published in Nature Climate Change, the professor suggests weighing up the cost of the necessary work against the benefits of reducing the risk from extreme weather problems, such as flooding.
Alternatively, decision makers can seek the most cost-effective way of maintaining a tolerable level of risk, according to the research.
- The research article ‘Proportionate adaptation’ is published in Nature Climate Change and was written by members of the the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research.

Action against climate change will only happen if there's profit in it. Free-market capitalism is designed to serve a handful of individuals, not the whole community, or even species. Nothing happens unless those that hold the capital can see a way of it increasing their wealth.

The problem of flooding is caused mostly for two reasons, that is houses are being built on flood plains that would not have been built on in the past for that reason and farmers are not keeping the drainage ditches clear in the countryside and front gardens are being paved over for cars which both prevent quick drainage of water away from the area.
What is needed is for the water comanies to upgrade their drainage facilities and keep the rivers clear and not pipe streams for convenience.
As usual the doomonger cry Climate change which is the usual way they justify their existance and over tax us.

Let's face it, the British cannot cope with anything other than mediocre weather. A few dry days in the spring and the panic mongers start blaming climate change and start worrying about reservoir levels. A week of piddling rain and the same group of people are telling us all the wet conditions are due to climate change and we are all doomed unless we cycle everywhere. What a load of cobblers!
I take it there is no column space for some pencil neck water board official telling us the reservoirs are full?
Perhaps building some more flood defences and repair the dissolved roads would help us with the unemployment problems and the recession. Sounds like a good idea to me!
