Moment of history as the three queens meet
 |
| The QM2 passes the QE2 |
A DRAMATIC spectacle was played out on a grand scale with three of the world's most famous leading ladies starring in a show only Southampton is able to stage.
This was a one-off, unmissable occasion which the city had never seen before nor will ever see again when all three Cunard "Queen'' liners gathered together in their home port for the first and last occasion yesterday.
Never before has this been possible but these days, for the first time in its long history, Cunard, a name inextricably linked to Southampton, is able to claim a fleet of three Queens in service at the the same time.

Sadly, however, this boast will be short-lived as the venerable ocean-going dame of the seas, Queen Elizabeth 2, a liner unrivalled not only in the city's pride but also in the nation's affections, is preparing to face her final curtain.
The present Cunard flagship, the vast Queen Mary 2, together with the company's newest ship, Queen Victoria, both have careers in front of them stretching far into the 21st century but later this year QE2's remarkable sea-going days will draw to a close when she finally leaves Southampton, after more than 40 years service, on Tuesday, November 11.
History in the making may be a cliché
but there are no other words to describe
the scene that unfolded on the city's
waterfront in front of thousands of people
both on shore and afloat in a flotilla
of yachts, motor launches, pleasure
craft and, even canoes.
It could not have been more appropriate
that, on a warm spring afternoon,
Southampton Water was the perfect setting
as, one by one, the three Cunarders,
the only liners with the name of the city
emblazoned on their hulls, played their
individual roles in the unforgettable
event.
Last January all three Queens did
meet up in New York for what was then
thought to be the only time but, by a
twist of fate, a late change to QE2's sailing
programme resulted in
Southampton's unexpected bonus of
being able to witness this historic meeting.
Click here to watch the video
QE2 was already alongside berth 105 in
the city's Western Docks, where she is
undergoing a short maintenance period,
when, before dawn, she was joined, in
the docks, by QM2 and Queen Victoria.
Then, over the following hours, the
port of Southampton saw the remarkable
and unequalled sight of the Cunard
fleet of three Queens berthed in their
home port on the same day.
As the time approached for the sailpast
to begin, every vantage point in
Mayflower Park, Town Quay, Hythe
marina and pier was packed with
crowds of sightseers all anxious for a
grandstand view of this unique sight.
A little after 5.30pm QM2 let go her
mooring ropes and slowly, almost imperceptibly
at first, moved away from her
berth in the Eastern Docks and began
her sedate progress up towards Queen
Victoria alongside the City Cruise
Terminal and QE2 at the nearby 105
berth.
As QM2, escorted by two harbourmaster
launches, and Queen Victoria came together
the first fanfare of deep-throated blasts from
the two vessels' whistles echoed out across
the city.
Then it was the turn of QE2, with her distinctive,
booming whistle, to join in the
salutes as QM2 came to a stop and, despite her
huge size of 151,000 tons, performed a delicate
pirouette before starting her return trip down
past the other two ships.
Once again the air came alive with the
sound of the ships' whistles and at one point
as QM2 came level with Marchwood a loud
siren on the shore joined in the noisy greetings.
Passengers and large numbers of crew lined
the decks on each of the ships to cheer as QM2
gave a final blast before setting a course down
Southampton Water, through the Solent and
out into the Atlantic for a trip to New York.
Minutes later Queen Victoria began
manoeuvring away from the quayside and out
into the port's main channel as she began a
voyage that will take her to the Canary
Islands and back.
As the crowds began drifting away just QE2,
veteran of the 1982 South Atlantic conflict
and a hundred other headline-grabbing
adventures, remained in port to complete her
refit in readiness for her farewell season of
cruises.

Watching this spectacle was magnificent - spoilt only by the Town Crier bawling out inane things - thankfully he was frequently drowned out by the 3 ships whistles.

I think that there is one true queen and two blocks of flats!! I mean look at the back end of the QM2. It is square like a ro-ro ferry and then someone obviously thought, Oh we better stick on a round back side. Nothing on the QE2, and as for the Victoria. Well it's just another bland cruise ship painted black. Sorry to be negative.

I agree!!! Keep the QE2 and consign the others to Dubai. They look much more like floating hotels. Cunard, you played a blinder choosing those new designs. John Brown or H&W would have produced something elegant.

Shame that SCC cannot improve Mayflower park as the place to watch these "spectaculars" as they are becominng more frequent. Also I hope they've checked the concrete shelter that people stand on top of and under. It looks like an accident waiting to happen.

I went to see the 3 ships and thought they were magnificent and would love to go on one just to see what they are like. When the Queen Mary passed the QE2 and Victoria blasting there horns i was proud to have been there, this is part of Southamptons history to which i am proud to be part of, shame others dont feel the same.

Some may scoff and laugh, but this is unique maritime history, and the real star of the show didnt even have to move!
As QE2 enters her final few months of active passenger service, shes about to take her final curtain call, a standing ovation is assured, and the gracefull QE2 will exit stage right, Her tear stained audience giving her the send of she deserves. Goodbye faithful friend and this time there wont be an encore.

Compared to the old Union Castle line, the Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth and QEII, I think that these monstrosities are ugly, and not at all elegant or majestic as the others.
These remind me of floating blocks of flats!
Nothing at all graceful about them!

As though they began with a car ferry but changed the design at the last minute to make it look like a liner, HA! That fact that there are multiple flagships de-values the idea of going on one vessel as was the QE2. She may be old but I'd rather drive an E-type than a new Suzuki Liana!!

Roughly translated you won't generate the same sort of pride had it been built at say Swan, H&W or John Brown. Nah, they've missed the point but then again maybe tradition doesn't appeal to the current market - plastic foreign immitations are all the rage!!

I was very sad to miss this special occasion as I have the misfortune to live in the Midlands, although I grew up in Southampton and remember the original Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth. It made me very homesick not to have been there to share this special piece of maritime history, which these three ships are part of.

It's hard to get excited when all new vessels seem to be built abroad. I think everyone agrees that the unions needing pulling into line...but killed off entirely?? Well done Maggie, you used a sledgehammer to smash a nut and now we have to have our ships built the chinese, italians, germans etc. I found last night quite depressing... and look out of your window..wheres all the 'England' flags? It's St Georges Day and nothing is happening..what an apathetic nation of spineless lemmings we have become. It's very sad.

WHAT A FANTASTIC SIGHT!! WELL DONE CUNARD
IT WAS GREAT TO SEE ALL THREE QUEENS TOGETHER
I VIEWED THEM FROM TOWN QUAY,THIS WAS ONLY
SPOILT BY THE RUDE AND AGGRESSIVE SECURITY
MAN WHO APPROACHED ME AS I WAS PHOTOGRAPHING
THE EVENT( I WAS STOOD ON TOP OF A BRICK BIN
AS WERE MANY OTHER SPECTATORS,VIEWING THE
EVENT,I WAS ASKED TO GET DOWN, AND WHEN I
ASKED WHY, I WAS TOLD BY THE SECURITY MAN
THAT IF I DIDNT,HE WOULD PULL ME DOWN
AND THROW ME OFF THE QUAY!!
I DID GET DOWN,BUT WAS THERE ANY NEED FOR SUCH
AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOUR FROM THE GUARD, AS HUNDREDS OF OTHERS WERE ALSO STOOD ON RAILINGS
AND BARS TO GET A BETTER VIEW,I FELT I WAS
BEING DISCRIMINATED AGAINST!!
PERHAPS SOUTHAMPTON CITY COUNCIL SHOULD BE MORE
CHOOSY ABOUT WHO THEY EMPLOY, TO DO A JOB FOR THEM!!.[bold]bold[/bold]

firstly, im from southampton and am veryproud to have witnessed the 3 queens spectacular (where else in the world has this been seen? oh just New York!!) Secondly, although to some they may look like floating hotels, i doubt very much that these critics have actually been aboard and therefore have no right to criticise ( you try and get 100,000 + to float!!) and thirdly is there anyway the daily echo can stop our childish neighbours from down the road critisising everything and anything about Southampton.
