Portsmouth will no longer try to be a host city for the 2018 FIFA World Cup

Fratton Park, which would have need much work to host World Cup football Fratton Park, which would have need much work to host World Cup football

by Daniel Hewitt

PORTSMOUTH will not be bidding to be a host city for the 2018 World Cup - but it may still be too late for Southampton to join the race.

After hours of debate, Portsmouth councillors took the decision to not bid for host status as the council would have to stump up £24m.

Only 13 councillors voted in favour, 24 against with one abstaining.

Saints' chairman Nicola Cortese has expressed his desire for Southampton to be a host city should England host the 2018 or 2022 World Cups.

The city would be well placed to meet all the requirements, with St Mary's Stadium designed to be expanded to a maximum capacity of 55,000.

However, Marcus Liebherr's takeover of the club was not completed long before the deadline for applications to the FA from interested cities.

This did not give the club or Southampton City Council time to launch a bid and it may now be too late - despite the strength of any bid compared to other cities in the South of England.

During last night's debate at Portsmouth Guildhall, the council leader, Gerald Vernon-Jackson, said: “If we say no then we are saying to people that we don’t care about jobs and the people in this city. It makes me feel sick.

Councillors feared the consequences of the FIFA contract, which says once a local authority has committed by bidding, there is no escape if there are financial troubles.

Tory Cllr Donna Jones, opposing the bid, had strong words. “I felt very bad today that the FA has allowed FIFA to bend us over and spank us hard,” she said.

The authority would need to spend £6m on temporary seating for Fratton Park to meet the required 45,000 capacity - assuming the ground was expanded by Portsmouth Football Club to around 30,000 in the first place.

The authority would also need to find a further £3m to stage fan festivals across the city and £2m for promotion and 'city dressing'.

Cllr Mike Hancock opposed the bid as he thought it was a waste of taxpayers’ money and said that it could be spent more effectively in impoverished parts of Portsmouth. “There is nothing right about being cavalier with other peoples’ money,” he said.

The decision came on the same day as Portsmouth Football Club sacked manager Paul Hart, with the team rooted to the bottom of the Premier League with just seven points.

They were mentioning a potential bill in the region of £24m with the lack of support from the Government/FA. Why would Southampton need or want a bill like that? Surely any amount like that can be invested in a lot better areas like schools, roads, housing, Saganowski's diet (!) etc. - Much more worthwhile reasons than two or three matches played by over-rated, poncy national teams.....like the England team for example!

I can't see a problem with Southampton being a host city for the World Cup as long as the entire cost was met by the Football Association and through the ticket prices. Why should Council Tax payers with no interest in it be lumbered with a massive bill? London taxpayers are in debt for years with the rocketing cost of the Olympic Games. How many would want that fiasco if the choice was offered today?

I personaly am not aware of the exact cost to S.F.C of a successful application.
Would seem however that anything that promotes our Global Image is probably something that The Management,as we climb the leagues, would want.
You cant sell something to the non converted if it's not in the shop window!
As one of The Faithful I'm not overly bothered if we do or dont apply but would love to see our Club revenues benefit if more support were to result
from a succesful application.

Haha - I can't believe Pompey were even thinking about bidding in the first place. Can you imagine World Cup games at Fratton Park? The entire planet would absolutelyPISS itself laughing. People in war-ravaged parts of Africa would would be crammed round a solitary tv clutching some cholera-infested glass of water saying "Man, thank god we're not there".

But we, on the other hand, definitely should bid. The whole existence of Southampton as we know it is down to its history as a port and its links with the international community. This would be a great way not only of celebrating that history but also reinforcing it and reminding potential trade partners just how big a deal Southampton is.

Maybe there are nicer places but none of them have football teams or decent stadia.
As for Poopey. I think it speaks volumes as to whether the club is being re developed or not. it would seem NOT.
As for Saints, things are looking up,
We are in touch with mid table. Just need to be a little more consistent and New year could find us nicely positioned if anyone above slips up.

As my origins are in the SO postal area, I guess it must be something that I picked up in my youth Tye-Dye! At least I was not so keen to get away from the area that I relocated to outer space!
If, as you claim, 'People in war-ravaged parts of Africa would would (???) be crammed round a solitary tv clutching some cholera-infested glass of water saying, "Man, thank god we're not there." I wonder what they would say, having seen the Spinnaker Tower, HMS Victory, the Warrior, Gunwharf Quay etc etc, if they were shown what Southampton has to offer!
"Man, thank god we're not there, there is not even an iconic building and the biggest attraction is Derby Road!"

Come back down to earth!

For this event to take place in our area would need the co-operation of a number of cities, because neither Portsmouth or Southampton would be able to provide all of the facilities on their own.
Each team would need their own training facilities and hotel accommodation and would not want to share, and that is before the fans arrive on the scene!

What I find strange is that the Government and the Lottery are putting a hell of a lot of money into the Olympics, that will be watched by considerably less people than will watch the World Cup!

I wonder why!

If, as you claim, those poor Africans would think themselves lucky not to live in Portsmouth, with its Spinnaker Tower, Gunwharf Quay, Royal Navy, HMS Victory, the Warrior, Mary Rose etc etc, I wonder how they would react to seeing what Southampton has to offer - which is? Remind me? Oh yes! A container port and the Bargate! Very inspiring! A city of culture! Even had to exhibit a portrait of John Westwood to attract visitors!

Now, to be serious!

Neither Portsmouth nor Southampton could be a World Cup venue without the help and co-operation of other cities.

Countries would need their own hotel accommodation, not sharing.
Their own training facilities, not sharing and there would not be enough hotels in any one city to cope with the visitors both from home and from abroad.

When the Government and Lottery can pour so much cash into the Olympics, the question has to be asked why they are not doing the same for the World Cup.

The Olympics are no longer restricted to amateur sportsmen, so that excuse cannot be used and the tv audience for the world cup would be bigger than that for the olympics!

One is the sport of toffs and the other the working man's sport!

First and foremost this is great news because it shows the guy is here for the long term.
Secondly, with regards to the projected costs of extending the stadium, I believe Cortese/Liebherr would gladly cover them, as they would recoup the money through global advertising of products, including the "family" businesses. They could even insist on any company involved in the extension using Liebherr vehicles and film it as part of the advertising campaign.
This is a win - win situation for Southampton FC and the city.

Porchester Castle was OK ... always a real risk that someone would fall down the stairs, which added to the excitement of the day.

And it's in better condition than the local football ground, and gets more visitors.

Linesman, i'm pretty sure there would not be a shortage of training grounds in and around Southampton. As far as hotels is concerned, again Southampton is not that small and when you take all surrounding areas there would be no problem hosting players and fans from different countries. Its not as if England is so big that a neighbouring town or city is thousands of miles away!!

In response to the question "why should the council pay?", because the city will benefit MASSIVELY in terms of increased tourism and trade during the world cup which all adds to the revenue they would get back as a result. Aswell as the increased status and improvement to the city that will benefit EVERYONE here. All the many thousands of visitors will need to eat places, stay somewhere, do a bit of shopping in our humungous shopping mall and generally pump millions into our economy.
The bid would not be and expense, it would be an INVESTMENT into the city.

I'm all for the bid if we are allowed to enter one.

In short, Pompey would be a great place to visit for those comming to Southampton for the World Cup, whensover the FA manage to attract it here.
Further, there's nothing much wrong with Southampton some professional publicity couldn't fix - the medieval walls are two-thirds extant, and we've three magnificent gateways, which is more than the rest of the medieval towns in this country can put together. And, as mentioned above, it's green, friendly and has lots of other things going for it.

Good points Southy!
Biggest green belt inside a city - a hamd-out to pervs and molesters as is evidenced quite regularly in The Echo.
Two of the greatest Earls of England beheaded there. High praise indeed!
The Pilgrim Fathers sailed from Southampton! - The Mayflower was on the point of doing a 'Titanic' so had to call into Plymouth to be made seaworthy, which is why, where they landed in America is called Plymouth Rock and not Southampton Rock!
Southampton was a Roman Fort! Defending what from whom?
As Southy said, the Victory was built at Chatham, and they had oak trees available a lot nearer!
Bucklers Hard is in the New Forest, not Southampton!
It has one of the biggest shopping malls in Europe, and Solent Village and Above Bar have suffered as a result!
It has a football ground built on the old gasworks site, that is poorly situated to reach either by public transport or by car. It could be extended, but there has never been the need with attendances at the 20,000 mark.
The City has a good airport? Situated in the borough of Eastleigh, and was always known as Eastleigh Airport!
Good rail links? Southampton Central. Hardly sited in the centre of town!
Good road links? Listen to the traffic reports on Radio Solent any morning!
It has numerous hotels and guest houses! Yep! Derby Road! By the hour!

OK! Lets get back to football!

Premier League or Div 1?

There are sufficient stadia to meet the 40,000 capacity criteria set by FIFA. We could never sell the expanded ground out except for derby games and the odd fixture against a really big team. Better it goes to London, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield, Birmingham, Sunderland and Newcastle.

Alas, the rest was inane drivel about the virtues of a skate city, and poorly articulated as we are all used to from you and your sub-human ilk, Milton Road answered you far more accurately than you deserve, you are much more efficient at delivering condescending one liners to posters on here, even though you reveal yourself as the antipathy of what you post. For a start Tye-Dye, as this is an Echo site and I am a reader of The Echo, you are in no position to say whether or not I am welcome on this site!
So you were born and bred in Woolston! Not something that I would boast about, having been born and brought up in a more select area, but there are always the 'haves' and 'have nots' I suppose! No wonder you make no mention of it in your post name!

In life, I have found that it is not where you start that counts, but where you end up! I guess you are still in Woolston! You have my utmost sympathy!

I note that you have not mentioned any iconic buildings in Southampton or any tourist attractions! I wonder why?

Thanks for your open-ended offer!

Having studied the drivel you leave on here with monotonous regularity, I thought the only open ended offer that you could make would be an open mouth at one end and the orifice from which you talk on the other!

Why do those bitter and twisted folk down the road bother. No manager, no money, bottom of the league with united up next!!
I for one would love it if were possible for a late bid for a world cup venue.
Lets look at something that even those unfortunates from skateland can`t disagree about.
We are the main and biggest by volume cruise liner port in northern Europe.
Each cruise ship turnaround generates on average 1 million pounds to the local economy, as is reported in the past by the Echo. Take on average 2,000 off-2,000 people on and you don`t have to be Einstein to realise that with 40,000 fans turning up, most staying for at least two days the revenue that could be generated.
Mr Leibherr is a hard nosed successful businessman, and Mr cortese is a shrewd and financial kingpin from his previous career.
I`m sure there are lots of things to consider, not least the cost of extending SMS. But assuming this project has already been thought about, a successful venue bid can only generate funds which would offset this outlay making it a win win situation.

Vision and commitment from the council well...............t
hat's an entirely different matter!

Although I'm not much of a football fan myself, the prospect of Southampton hosting two world cups during the next decade (the other being the confirmed rugby world cup) is exciting. As I understand it, the costs ought to be at least slightly less than Portsmouth's would have been due to the fact that we have a stadium with the required capacity already (once expanded). Hopefully it's not too late for Southampton to get it!

Sorry I did not spot your piece earlier Saint Pete II.

As you would appreciate, there are training grounds and there are training grounds. The facilities that Saints have at Marchwood are first class, but those that Pompey use in Stoneham Lane are not, and unless there has been a massive input of cash into the Sports Centre, they are not either. Come the World Cup, all being well, Pompey's planned training ground and facilities would be up and running.
Reading's facilities would also be available as would Brighton's. Four separate facilities, that would be rented for the period of use and all within a reasonable distance.
Although Southampton has first class hotels, teams would not want to be in the same hotel, and probably not in the same town or city, so they also would be spread around, attracting money into that area. Likewise their fans from abroad and those living in this country.
I am disgusted that Portsmouth City Council appear to have made not contact with Southampton, Reading or Brighton Councils to discuss how this bid to host World Cup matches could be shared amongst us, for the benefit of us all.
An ideal opportunity to bring into our respective areas appears to have been lost dut to the apathy of Portsmouth City Council.
It would appear that a £20m bond had to be put in place. A lot of cash for one city!
However, if Portsmouth were to have the actual matches played there, why not Portsmouth City Council put up £8m with Southampton, Reading and Brighton putting up £4m each?
There may have been some haggling, but it would have been a starting point, rather than just quit! Apparently they have already spent £250,000 and now have nothing to show for it except some posters and redundant T shirts!
As you rightly say, the money would be recouped by tourists, with Southampton possibly having a cruise ship in for the occasion!
Unfortunately, it would appear that the time for bids to be a host has long since past, so unless there is a dramatic change in the rules, Southampton cannot enter a bid, and thanks to the incompetence of Portsmouth City Council, any cash that would have been made by the respective cities will now be spent elsewhere!

I was pointing out the infrastructure was all in place. You tell me a city that doesn't have traffic problems and traffic jams. We all know the best place for the ground to be built was down by the Airport but it wasn't. yet it has a close rail link. Park and ride schemes would be in place which would eleviate alot of problems.
I could go on about history again but there is alot of history in Southampton, including the Tudor Museum
Yet to be honest most people coming for the world cup, will want pubs clubs and grub.
How can anyone say Saints haven't got the stadium to house world cup matches? when we have one of the top ten stadias in the country fact and one that can be enlarged. Note crowds in the premiership filled the ground capacity and many people who wanted to attend games could not get in.
Pompeys new facilities are not happening as stated by the owner, only some ground improvements out of the 10 million that has been borrowed form a property owner against the club. Pompey is more likely to be re-developed for housing rather than a football club.
Why do you think the bid has been withdrawn by the council, they would have been expected to cough up for the club's re-development as the owners have no intent of doing so.
Pompeys infrastructure is antiquated and has long tail backs.
Southampton's ground is light years ahead of the shed down the M27 that doesn't even get filled on match days in the Premiership.
Southampton logically is the only ground south of london capable of housing world cup matches.
Alot changes agreed in nine years. it is quite likely there will not be a pompey f.c. then, other than in the conference. Sharing a ground with Waterlooville. To put it bluntly Pompey is a slum. The idea of housing world cup football there is nuts. It would give the wrong impression of what England is really like. Where Southampton would give a positive forward looking image.

But is it just me or are all Portsmouth's 'attractions' that you mention all things that us from the nice end of the M27 used to get dragged to on school trips and find really, really boring? Seriously, no one enjoys HMS Victory and the Mary Rose is the biggest load of cack put on display to the public outside of Fratton Park. What else have you got? Some brass rubbings?
If you still believe that Portsmouth's heritage is boring I would suggest that you must have an attention span so slight you need treatment - please don't breed! All we lack is the application of imagination and gumption by the City Council and the local media. It would make a world of difference.
Of course I have a short attention span - I'm a product of the soundbite culture and we're the future. In case you didn't know, anyone under 35 finds old ships and old wars really, really boring. But boring is better than the rest of Portsmouth, which is just a bit depressing. (O, and I have already bred. I shall take my kids to play frisbee on Southampton Common rather than make them trudge round looking at a pile of knackered old boat.)

Its little wum's like you who can act full of bravado with a keyboard in front of you, yet when someone you have personally slighted calls your bluff, answers all your questions and provides more info than you ever would, wishes to meet up and take this moronic diatribe off this excellent site for SAINTS fans, and have a face to face discussion about it then you revert to type and cyber warrior again. What an absolute coward you are, you couldnt discuss the problem because you are only brave behind your keyboard, you so obviously couldnt handle a face to face meeting because you tar all fans with the same brush, and think everyone is not up to your intellectual level, when in reality you are the one bullying and acting the yob. Thank you for proving me right about you all along, not once did you entertain the idea of a meeting, all you have done is portray yourself a overbearing coward, you should be proud skate as your a perfect example of your club, directors, fans, stadium, City, i.e not worth a w**k.

oh sorry i could not stop laughing. good airport well its sort of middle to fair but not good. good rail link, its at its close to its maximum capacity. good road links, oh boy this has to be the best joke of all, southampton is a bottle neck. just look what happens now with its traffic jams, and pot hole roads, southampton is a natural bottle neck, and its due to the fact that it is V shape. victory was built at chatham docks and the wood to build her came in from all over the country, most of it came from kings forest. southampton ground would be good for a training ground for the world cups teams and thats about it.

If you ever try waving the "I was going to the Dell before you were born laddie" flag again I will simply copy and paste this post every time skate, so everyone who has had the misfortune to follow our infantile rantings on this article will know exactly where you stand and who you support, got that coward.

Nice to see that Mummy has got you up early for your paper round.
It is nice to see how tough you are when dealing with an Old Age Pensioner, I wonder how tough you are when confronted with someone your own age at school!
Incidentally, the word condescend means "to behave patronizingly towards one's supposed inferiors".
I have never considered Saints fans to be my inferior, although with some individuals it is questionable. By you using the term, it would appear that you seem to think that is the case.
As said, call me a skate if you wish. Coming from a minnow, I find it rather amusing!
I expect that, when you are at school, your playmates still sing, "Sticks and stones can break my bones, but calling names can't hurt me!"
Don't forget to take teacher an apple today!

And now your a supposed old man??!!! Are you stalking me you pervert?? Christ, no wonder why you come on our site, most of us are easy prey for you and your sick desires. Your all the same you skates, no wonder why you arent brave enough to reveal your identity, already on the register are you bottle-less pervert, so the police are aware of you I truly hope??? When you call me a minnow skate pervert to what part of my anatomy are you referring, it sounds like you are having your usual sick desires, is no-one safe from your grooming technique on here?? It all becomes clear at last, the bottler is a peado, and he fantasises that everyone is a child on our site for his twisted pleasure. Not only are you a degenerate skate, your also a pervert, your wife must be proud, do she even know your identity?? Usually evil nonces like you keep it hidden?? So, when you refer to a 42 year old man as a child, we all know what you are up to, evil skate nonce.

I quite thought that with your 6.37am garbage that it was your contribution before you did your paper-round and then off to school.
I note that, with further examples of your juvenile stupidity, that you have either been excluded, which would be quite understandable, played truant, probably because you are fed up with sitting in the corner, or else you are unemployed/unemploya
ble, which also would appear to be a reasonable assumption!

Old timer, I work in your area every day, covering Fareham, Skatetown, and Soton, if you ever want me to prove to that to you my offer is still there, not only 42yrs old but 6'3 and 15stone, kind of shatters your sick and twisted fantasy of me doesnt it?? In these modern times people use laptops and a really clever invention called a dongle(NO!!! not the sort your thinking, pervert!!) or an AirCard, with this modern capability I can log on all day wherever I am, and let you make me laugh by your ever diminishing brain cell comments, so want me to come and knock on your door to prove all I have to say, name: provided, age: provided, Height: provided, weight: provided, address: provided, now its your turn...........

6'3'' and 15 stone! I didn't realise that you could stack garbage that high!
Well, if your carer was taking you to all those areas, you probably passed my favourite local pub, the Spinnaker at Swanwick.
Mind you, they do not allow the yob element in, so you would not be allowed in.
I would like to congratulate you on one thing. That is your first communication where you have not needed to use *** in your words.
Being fat and 42, I wonder whether, in the unlikely event that you have met a woman who would want to procreate with you, what your attitude would be to a youngster wanting to go round beating people up? You know, following the example that you appear to be setting?
No wonder the kids of today are the way they are when they see the example set by middle-aged yobs like yourself!

And there you go again, acting the cyber warrior with no bottle to back it up, still no chance of a meet up then?? Though its brave of you to let me know your drinking hole, I would love to see you eat humble pie on the fat comment, not every 6'3 15stone men are obese, some of us do a job that requires grafting, and consequently have a physique that they, and the wife, are very happy with. How about your wife, is she in need of a real man or happy with the wrinkled old coward she see's before her? So, drinking hole established, care to elaborate on your appearance as I have with you, or is that a step too far?? No, not all 6'3'' men are obese, but some are, especially between the ears!
I note that you are back to the ****'s. Just shows a lack of education when you cannot conduct a correspondence without using words that could get you banned by The Echo.
I have great respect for the Mormons, I wish I could say the same for the Morons!

So, is the wife up for meeting a real man or is she happy with the shrivelled up nonce coward she see's before her?? And its typical cyber warrioring of you to comment on my alleged appearance, while not once being brave enough to reveal yours you skate f****** bottler. C'mon you sick skate pervert, stop hiding behind the keyboard, leave wearing her dresses alone and be a man for once. But as is typical of all loud mouth skate nonces like you, it isn't going to happen because your not intelligent enough to realise whats happend, I would out think, out fight and out f*ck you even when you were a 42. I'm dealing with a sad lonely skate, who never achieved what life intended, so consequently everyone who dares question him is ridiculed, while he himself is the butt of everyones joke, on here, at home, in the spinnaker, and could never have kids because he was never man enough to produce the essential ingredient of life. So this sad lonely skate nonce wanders through forums, hoping to find easy prey for his acerbic comments so he can feel empowered and get the glow of satisfaction inside, while in reality nonce we all laugh at you on here, and can see you for what you are, you have proven that time and again within these posts. I am down Gosport, Fareham and Park Gate on Monday, cant pop in today as I actually do support my team home and away, so want me to pop in and show your wife a good time, and you my little skate cyber warrioring nonce how obese between the ears(??!!) I am?? ooops nearly forgot, Bottle-less Linesman is a f****** **** piece of **** who ***** fish and ***** over the Echo bit is really a ***** **** ***...there make your day nonce did it??

I will be there at 7.30, having a quiet pint.

I wonder whether you ever read the drivel that you post.
You really are a sad, pathetic specimen.
No wonder you are located at Veil Nebula, because you are certainly like nothing on earth!
Out of touch with reality!

I'm off to Northampton!

Dont expect you to be able to answer any of the above, as you are full of sh*t as all cowards are, loved hearing your nonce team got a football lesson...AGAIN LOL!!!! Whats it like supporting a sh*te team who are the worst to ever grace the Prem, with the only Arab shiek who has to borrow money, and a C.E who is as bent as Redknapp, and a stadium that is the laughing stock of not only this Country, but did you hear what the Milan fans thought of it, let alone the 'Gers who thought they were back in the Gorbals, really laughed at your inbred shame at that!!! Good morning Podge!
I have no intention of giving you my seat number. Whether or not you believe that I attended does not bother me in the slightest!
Oh! You wanted a land-mark! I don't know whether the KFC just outside the ground qualifies, but I visited it before the match, after I had paid my £3 parking fee!
What does bother me is, what the hell is an 'Arab Shiek'? I have checked in my dictionary and can find no such thing! Could it be that you looked in the mirror and saw something that looked like Shrek? After all, Veil Nebula could well be populated by wierd looking, podgy green people! Could that possibly be the reason why you have a penchant for adding stars (*)? Do you do it because you are unsure of the spelling? Were you playing with something under the desk when you should have been paying attention? It is not true that it will make you go blind, but it could well qualify you to be a referee!
I have come to the conclusion that you know about as much about football in general, and Saints in particular, as you do about spelling!
Only someone who does not attend St Marys and does not talk with those that attend, would think that you have to live in Southampton to be a Saints fan!
They would know that they live in virtually every county with plenty of them living abroad. Being a busy sea port, with many seamen originating from the area, and settling abroad, that is hardly surprising. With that in mind, only a complete plonker would think that, just because someone lives in Fareham, which is about half-way between Fratton Park and St Mary's, cannot be a Saints fan!
You really are a sad, pathetic person!
You talk tough, but only smell strong!

So, you know there's a KFC outside their stadium, good boy, what was next to it because you clearly cannot answer anything else about our position within the ground, moronic answer from a inbred skate cowardly w*nk*r who cyber warriors for all his worth, but cant see whats actually going on here but you will nonce. The cowardly skate nonce has no intention of ever meeting up, although he acts brave with a keyboard in front of him as all can see. Like all skate nonce cowards he has a very big mouth and he likes to feel brave thinking he wont ever get the knock on the door, but he wont give his address as we all wouldnt expect from a skate nonce, so thankyou to those that have provided some info, the spinnaker contact especially(ST your a star!) Right, time to call this infantile rant between the pair of us to an end, we have both proved our collective mental age is about 4, and it could go on for ever. The Echo have put a system in place which means any skate wum, like you or any other that comes on this site, and causes problems will be banned and the i.p address traced, so think carefully what you post in future, any degrading comments will be reported. In the interest of peace breaking out, I do agree with a lot of what you post on here usually, a lot of it makes sense, interesting to see what happens from here on in.

It has been fun having a chat with you, and could well imagine that, if by chance we met in the Spinnaker, we would probably get along fine!
With regard The Echo site, you should remember that it is also on sale in Fareham, and in these financially troubled times, they would not want to lose any readers.
With regard degrading comments. I feel certain that the people at The Echo are intelligent enough to figure out what words are intended when stars or symbols are substituted for letters!! That is something I never had cause to do!
Anyway, all the best! Enjoy your football!
