THE preserved steam locomotive, Duchess of Sutherland, passed majestically through Andover recently as it helped commemorate the last steam locomotive in commission with British Rail nationally in 1968.
As part of The Cathedral Express run, she stopped off at Salisbury to the delight of steam enthusiasts before heading on to Exeter.
The Duchess of Sutherland was outshopped in July 1938 from Crewe works and was initially based in Camden.
She was installed with a double chimney in 1941 and then smoke deflectors, because of drifting smoke, in 1945.
She was sent to Crewe North Depot with the creation of British Railways in 1948, and was allocated to Carlisle Upperby in 1958 before being withdrawn from service in 1964.
The locomotive was eventually acquired by The Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust and restored to working order. In 2001 she hauled the Royal Train as part of Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee.
