HOSPITAL bosses in Southampton have scooped an award for an innovative exercise scheme.

Southampton General Hospital’s Pedal Power project has won the value and improvement in clinical support services category at the Health Service Journal Value in Healthcare Awards 2014.

As previously reported in the Daily Echo, some patients in the general intensive care unit at Southampton General Hospital are placed on an early exercise programme using a bedside bicycle.

This is in order to improve their condition and allow them to leave the ward earlier.

The project is led by a team of physiotherapists who treated 97 patients in the project’s first year and saw the average length spent on the ward drop by two days.

These earlier discharges have led to an annual saving of £230,000.

Blood donors BLOOD donors are being urged to give life-saving blood at a clinic in Hampshire on Friday, October 10.
