SOUTHAMPTON researchers believe the key to a healthy baby could be what a woman eats before she becomes pregnant.

Scientists from the University of Southampton have taken part in a major review of diets for expectant mothers between 1978 to 2011.

And the team say greater understanding is needed over nutrition before conception to ensure babies are born at a good weight and do not require neonatal intensive care.

Professor Keith Godfrey, of the University of Southampton, said: “Getting maternal nutrition right may require ensuring that all women have access to adequate diets before conception, not just during pregnancy.”

But despite the international review, led by the University of Newcastle, Australia, there is still no breakthrough on an optimum diet for pregnancy.
