SHE has been under the knife more times than she’s had birthdays.

Lydia Stapleton was born with joint condition, congenital dislocation of hip (CDH), which has led to her having 17 operations in her lifetime.

She was just six months old when she had her first operation and last went under the knife in November when she had her foot reshaped.

Now the Lordswood 15-year-old’s dad is lacing up his running shoes to thank doctors for helping his daughter.

Richard Stapleton is preparing to join thousands of runners as he takes on the first ABP Southampton Half Marathon to raise money to buy new toys for Southampton General Hospital’s G3 children’s ward.

Before he sets off on the 13.1 mile run with views across the city from the Itchen Bridge, and past landmarks including St Marys Football Stadium, Richard hopes to raise at least £300 for the cause.

The 41-year-old who works as a manager for CNS, part of DP World at Southampton docks, said: “When we go in there sometimes the operation can get postponed and they get put into a relatives’ ward where the toys are a little bit warn.

“If I can raise money for that it would make a big difference for the children.

“I have done the Great South Run five times but to have a race in Southampton is quite special. It’s an opportunity to see the city from a different perspective and I will be able to run past St Marys.”

Lydia will be cheering her dad on from the sidelines, along with her ten-year-old brother Robbie and mum Jane.

The Romsey Schoolgirl said: “I’m really proud of him because he’s going to raise money for toys for other children like me.”

Up to 6,000 people will be taking part in the race on Sunday, April 26, on the same day as the London Marathon.

It starts in Hoglands Park, passing The Bargate, The Common and both universities on its way to the finish line at Guildhall Square.

The run, being organised by Marafun UK and sponsored by Associated British Ports (ABP), will also raise thousands of pounds for local and national charities.
