ONE down 59 to go.

That is the challenge still remaining for a mother who plans to run 60 marathons in 60 days.

Alice Burch is attempting to complete more than 1,500 miles raising money for the animal charity Spana which works to improve the lives of working animals.

The 33-year-old, from Woodlands, will be covering 26.2 miles every day for 60 days and begun her challenge down at Southampton Sports Centre yesterday where she successfully completed her first.

Alice said she was feeling good but thought the challenge was harder than she had at first thought.

"I'm looking forward to getting my head down and bedding into the challenge," she said.

"I think every day is going to be a massive challenge, really tough.

"Running around in circles it's going to be quite boring."

She also hopes her ambitious feat will make her a Guinness World Record holder for running the most consecutive marathons.

Miss Burch, a lawyer and owner of a marine recruitment company, will run 59 of her marathons around the Southampton athletic track and will also compete in the Bournemouth marathon this Sunday.

She hopes to raise £100,000.
