Case of swine flu at Princess Anne hospital in Southampton

A MIDWIFE at a Southampton maternity unit has been diagnosed with swine flu, the Daily Echo can reveal.

Health bosses say members of staff at Princess Anne Hospital have been issued with the anti-viral drug Tamiflu as a precaution after a maternity worker was identified as having caught the most serious A/H1N1 strain of the disease.

The midwife, whose identity has not been revealed, had returned from overseas before being diagnosed - but has not come into direct contact with patients.

Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust has told staff to stay at work and confirmed the victim is recovering at home.

A Trust spokesman said: "This precautionary measure was taken in line with national guidance and the individual concerned, who is recovering well at home, has not had any direct patient contact since developing the symptoms.

"Maternity services at the Princess Anne Hospital continue to operate as normal. As a result of the confirmed case, staff have today been reminded that if they experience any flu-like symptoms they should remain at home.

"Women are advised that they should continue to contact their midwife in the normal way with any issues regarding their pregnancy. An information line has been set up for anyone with concerns about swine flu on 023 80796052."

Can we stop the hysteria over what is less troublesome than hayfever or normal flue.

I agree with Boris, this is a form of flu. Each year the NHS makes a flu vacine without knowing which flu will be most rife in the winter so at least knowing this one is about is a bonus.

The young girl that sadly died at the weekend and the pregnant lady who died a few weeks ago were both suffering other health issues and swine flu was another factor which added to their problems.

The media are happy to bang on about this but its here and like any other flu our immune systems will fight it so don't panic. (Mr Manwaring)

There is no Swine Flu at the hospital. A member of staff has it who has not been in contact with anyone.

Your report is scare-mongering and picking on the vunerable, this paper should be ashamed, can you find some real news instead of fabricating hysteria.

Yes, please do tell that to the parents of the little girl that died, and all those who usually have a vaccine because they have asthma, diabetes or other relatively normal heath issues, please do tell them not to worry about this.

How does this report pick on the "vunerable" (whatever that means)? If anything, they've made it perfectly clear that - fortunately - the swine flu victim has not come in to contact with patients. Surely they should be ashamed if they didn't report that someone who helps pregnant women had contracted such a serious virus. Would you be laughing if we all turned a blind eye to this incident and then - God forbid - a "vunerable" patient contracted this potentially deadly disease? But I guess letting the public know about current affairs and issues that could directly affect them should be stamped out altogether...best let those in power decide what's best for us rather than fabricating hysteria - isn't that right laughing Stalin?

I have asthma, and am vaccinated annually against "normal" flu. and I fail to see what's so offensive or wrong about Boris' post, nor am I particularly worried about "swine flu". Literally

Well I have a 5 yr old with Asthma who ends up in hospital when he gets an attack of croup and since this virus is particularly dangerous to those with asthma and other respitory problems (medical evidence not hysteria), I certainly am worried.
