Popular Southampton student Tom Hay found dead at home

“HE was just a healthy and gorgeous young man.We are completely devastated.”

Those were the emotional words of a grieving Hampshire mum after finding her 20-year-old son dead on his bedroom floor.

Popular student Tom Hay was found by mum Vivien as she went to take him a cup of tea after returning to their Chilworth home on Tuesday afternoon.

Police say they are not treating his death as suspicious but the cause remains a mystery.

His devastated family, including his 17-year-old sister Jennifer, who was meant to be sitting her A-levels this week, will now have to wait for the results of a post-mortem.

The news has shocked Tom’s many friends, including dozens of fellow students at Southampton Solent University, where he was in his second year studying advertising.

Described as a high flyer, the former pupil at The Gregg School, Southampton, had ambitions to become the very best in the world of advertising once he had completed his degree.

Tom, who had a part-time job at Waitrose in Chandler’s Ford, had spent the night before his death out with close friends in Portsmouth, but he’d volunteered to drive so he wasn’t drinking.

He returned home in the early hours with his friend and lodger Graham Gilmour and ate a takeaway before going to bed.

His body was found at about 1.45pm that day and police were called to the family home in Chilworth Old Village.

Paying tribute to her son, a tearful Vivien told the Daily Echo: “He was only 20, just a healthy and gorgeous young man.

“He had been out with his friends the night before, and he’d been to the gym before he went out. He came home about 2am and ate a Macdonald’s before he went off to bed.

“It’s just unbelievable.

Everyone is devastated.”

Vivien added: “He was very fit and healthy and went to the gym often but he also loved his car, and his shopping – he was the designer label king. He was going to go right to the top in advertising, he always aimed high.”

Tom’s grandfather Alan Tester added: “He was such a lovely boy, it’s a terrible shock. I’d just like to say thank you to his many friends who have inundated us with calls and messages.”

Friend Graham Gilmour described Tom as the most amazing person he knew.

“He was always open and funny, he loved life and made the most of the short one he had. If he saw you in trouble, he found a way of helping you even if you never noticed.

“There were so many things we were going to do but will never get the chance. He was almost like a sensible younger brother. I miss him so much.”

A statement from Southampton Solent University said: “The university is shocked and saddened by the news, and our thoughts go out to Tom’s family and friends at this difficult time.

“We would urge any students affected by this tragic news to approach the university’s student support services who have trained and dedicated staff to give confidential advice and support.”

We had some great times through school Tom, our Golf games every weekend with Jay and our paintball shooting at yours. You have been a huge success in everything you have ever done through school (and especially your Graphics at college). Our prom limo was great, and I still have the picture on the wall.. I will never forget you mate, and it was only a couple of weeks ago I saw you in the petrol garage. You have always been strong and talented in who you are and what you have done and archived, but most of all I will honestly be strong never to forget you. R.I.P Tom.

I never knew the person to whom you have written but can I add my sincere condolences as I too lost friends both at school and at college. A death of someone so young is always extremely perplexing. So sorry to hear about this.

Tom was the nicest and most loving guy that I have ever known. He was such a big personality and we all miss him so much.

I used to look forward to work because I knew that you would be there to amuse me while the hours passed, and when you weren't there, the evening just dragged on.

Tom was just like an older brother to me and touched my heart in a way that I will never forget.

Thank you for being a part of my life Tom and for all the memories you have left me with. I miss you so much.

All my love, Jess xx

Sit around and wonder,
watch the days go by.
Look at all the pictures,
and ask the reason why.

You've always been there for me,
because you were a friend,
I was always there for you
until the very end.

But now it's time to let you go,
your spirit now is free.
Even though you won't really be gone,
because you'll live inside of me.

This is hardly a goodbye,
I won't weep anymore,
now you're in better place
then you ever were before.

Tom you were loveliest, most genuine and sincere person i have ever met. And it was an honor to know you. You truly will be missed as you made an impression on so many people.
You will and always very much be loved and remembered.
Rest in peace. Xxx

its time we had some research in why so many of our young lads and lasses who on the face of it seem so healthy and fit, die so suddenly.

Steven Gately springs to mind, it's all very odd that young men die like this, and very sad too.

Very moving tributes from his friends. My own son is the year below Tom at Solent, and I cannot begin to imagine how his family must be feeling - my heart goes out to them. V difficult for young people to deal with such a loss, so make sure you all keep talking and supporting each other. Such a tragedy, I do hope that the family get some information as to c.o.d. so that they can grieve properly. RIP, lovely fella - it looks like you will be desperately missed by all X

Even though I didn't know you well at all, the news of this tragedy has been so shocking upsetting to hear. It's hard to figure out life's reasoning as to how someone so outgoing, with so many friends and admirers can be snatched from us all in the blink of an eye. I just hope you have gone to a better place, and that you carry all of our thoughts and prayers there with you.
I know you made a lot of people very happy, and if there's a lesson I can learn from you, it is to try to stay happy and positive, and make the most of this life.
Rest in peace, Tom
