Swine flu control room to close

SOUTHAMPTON'S swine flu control room is to close on Friday.

It was set up last May after the first wave of the pandemic and was used as a base for staff to help protect city residents.

A vaccination programme run from the control room will now continue through GP practices across Southampton.

The closure also means the end of a network of "flu friends" who collected and delivered anti-virals to vulnerable individuals who had no relatives or neighbours.

Doctors are still urging vulnerable groups who have previously been offered a swine flu jab to get in contact with their GPs to help protect themselves.

Swine flu is a respiratory disease caused by a new strain of the flu virus.

For most people swine flu is mild. It comes on quickly and generally lasts for around a week. Victims typically have a fever or a temperature over 100.4F (39C) and two or more of the following symptoms: tiredness, headache, runny nose, sore throat, shortness of breath or cough, loss of appetite, aching muscles, diarrhoea and vomiting.

Oh good, we can have our meeting room back at Oakley Road then :D

Would like to see the NHS re-opening a Walk-in centre in Shirley, in a different building (someone told me the old one was falling down?).... it was very well used and should never have been closed!

I guess the colder than expected weather has nailed the flu germs for now? Like the above poster, I was disappointed to hear the Shirley WIC had closed. As part of this, GP surgeries are supposed to be doing blood-letting again, but mine will only do that for over 60's, the same as when the Shirley centre was open. Something's gone wrong with the implementation of that part of the plan!

Some surgeries haven't even completed the swine flu jab programme yet! As for Shirley WIC, another promise broken - try and get a a blood test at Victor St Surgery - this WIC gave a great service and was always busy. The only choice is to go to the General Hospital for a BT, usually a long wait and the insult of £1.90 parking charge. Blame the PCT who do not have a grip on local health services.

Swine flu? I beleived the government and have been in a state of panic for ages.

I never eat eggs because Edwina Currie warned us of salmonella (about the same time as she was being 'Majored' in another study.

Oh - I nearly forgot- Mad Cow Disease. I bet some money was made out of that little episode and all quiet on the West Minster front eh?

Isnt it strange how bad news can be buried or simply forgotten as we lurch from one crisis to the next.

What's up next?

Agreed - same BS over here.
After the winter's over I'd really like to see some honest statistics of swine flu cases vs normal flu etc.

You forgot SARS. And ebola. And necrotizing fasciitis. And dangerous dogs. And terrorism. And bird flu. etc etc etc...

A population kept in a permanent state of fear are far easier to control.

Fully agree, governments love to keep us in fear so thay can make up false policies to win votes.

Biggest one so far is global warming which has now changed to climate change.
