Campers issued with killer barbecue fumes alert

Campers issued with killer barbecue fumes alert Campers issued with killer barbecue fumes alert

A CAMPAIGN has been launched in the New Forest to prevent campers being killed by carbon monoxide fumes from their barbecues.

It follows the separate deaths of two children thought to have been killed by carbon monoxide fumes that entered their tents as they slept.

The first tragedy happened at a campsite near Bransgore on Good Friday.

Six-year-old Isabelle Harris is thought to have been overcome by fumes from a foldaway barbecue placed just outside the tent.

Police believe it may have been left near the entrance to provide warmth on a cold night.

Earlier this month Hannah Thomas-Jones, pictured, 14, of Wilmslow, Cheshire, died in a similar incident at a site in Bucknell, Shropshire.

Now the Safer New Forest Partnership, which comprises the district council and other organisations, has issued a safety message to campers.

Posters warning of the dangers are being distributed to campsites and village halls across the Forest.

I was thinking about this the other day. Was going to spend some time researching it and maybe develop an alarm suitable for tents and camping.

This is a great idea and the campaign needs to go further afield than this. It should also be promoted in every camping shop and be put inside BBQ packaging. It should also be handed out at every campsite as part of their info packs. Knowledge is power.

Barbecues are a menace on camp sites unless wind conditions are very calm. Most food can be cooked quicker and more efficiently by other methods anyway. I've lost count of the number of times I've sat on a campsite and watched someone take 2 hours to cook half a pound of sausages!

I think they are more of an menace when the winds ARE calm this is why the carbon monoxide was allowed to sit around the tents. If there had been a wind it would have vented it away.

Agreed - they are dangerous to the user in calm conditions and a nuisance to others on windy days - a good case for banning their use on campsites.

We (at www.getoutwiththekid
s.co.uk) and the Camping Forum (www.thecampingforum
.co.uk) have recently kicked off a national awareness campaign.
The simple idea is to get campsites to put up at least one warning poster where campers will see it. Most people are unaware of the dangers or that a still warm BBQ gives off CO.

I have spoken to a national safety organisation, and we have also contacted the fire service (there is also a campaign run by them in Cornwall).
Between us we have contacted hundreds of campsites asking them to take action.

The Camping and Caravanning Club also has a campaign.

Hopefully together we can make a difference.
