Hampshire doctors vote for industrial action over pension reforms

Dr Nigel Watson. Dr Nigel Watson.

HAMPSHIRE doctors are among thousands in the country who have voted to take industrial action for the first time in almost 40 years.

A day of action will be held next month in protest at the Government’s controversial pension reforms.

The British Medical Association said non-urgent cases will be postponed on June 21 and that further action could not be ruled out.

Health bosses across the county have reassured patients that, should industrial action take place, they would have contingency plans in place to treat those who needed it.

Dr Nigel Watson, senior partner at the Arnewood practice in New Milton and a BMA member, told the Daily Echo: “It is very sad that it has got to this stage but the new proposals have made people very angry.”

Stuart Ward, medical director of the Southampton, Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Portsmouth PCT Cluster, said: “Should a strike be called, our expectation would be for GPs to continue to provide urgent cover for patients between 8am and 6.30pm. Outside of these hours NHS Direct is available.”

i don't see why any sector of society should be treated any differently whether it be teachers doctors police or the dustman, why should they be able to retire earlier than others with a massive pensions bigger than most people have ever earned during their lifetime. Civil servants sat on their backside all their working lives want to retire early with their good pension and extended life expectancy or a manual worker who's body is just about worn out who has to work on and probably retire with no pension and most likely die long before the civil servant. Oh yes we are all in it together alright. And then they come out with the best one i.e. they shouldn't lower our pension they should raise everybody's to match ours the trouble is Mervin King has lost his genie lamp.

Reportedly on double the average salary, guaranteed pension with a £160K payout upon retirement.

Sounds like a terrible deal to me, I'd be the first out the door.

In the unlikley event that you have the skills, knowledge, training, or just simple inteligence to be a doctor, I dare say you would still be a whining tory who thinks all indistrial action is wrong and the best thing any worker can do is kiss the bosses arse.

Senior doctors do earn a lot. They don't seek to hide this. But they earn nothing compared to merchant bankers and, just like the rest of us, they should not have to pay for bankers greed that got us into this mess.

As a working class person and a member of a trade union I feel I should support all who are fighting against Government changes to their pensions. However I can't in this case as doctors pensions are way too high. Last nights Television news said their pension is £50,000 a year if that's true and they strike then they deserve no support from the public.

If a doctor makes a mistake, one person dies. If an engineer makes a mistake hundreds can die. Doctors are over rated and overpaid.

You are correct.

In fact, believe it or not I'm not a doctor. I have nothing but admiration for someone who has obviously worked hard to become a doctor. Obviously, or we would all be dong it!

In fact I believe doctors to be an essential part of the public service and life in general, of course.

But when I walk past my GP's Jaguar & admire his golden sun tan then might I be forgiven for thinking that he doesn't have it that bad?

I don't consider it whining and I'm not a member of any political party, it's my personal opinion.

As for bringing up bankers, that's just a way of comparing them to Satan without having to think too much about it.

Apparently the last time Doctors went on strike, the death rate nationally actually fell.

Striking is the most pointless, lazy, undemocratic & selfish thing any worker can do, period.

It achieves nothing, if they had support then their parties would be in power (oh wait we tried having in pro-union parties and they "£$"$% up the whole country).

How anyone who would earn more on a pension than most people do in their working life can strike is farcical.

When the public wanted the government to take action against the banks, who were the cause of the current international financial crisis, we were told that if their bonuses and massive salaries were reduced or heavily taxed, they would move abroad.

The government does not appear to have any qualms about having a go at the doctors, who take care of our health and welfare.

What excuse will the government give if their action results in doctors emigrating to countries where their skill and expertise is appreciated?

If you have £250 pw coming into your house you can't spend £300 pw can you and its the same for the government on a slightly higher scale, they are trying to budget for the future and as things stand whats going into the house isn't enough to cover so much going out in the future. If you have the answer to the problem perhaps you better tell the government. I agree doctors are very important but they are already on very good terms and conditions and you also have to remember that everybody in society has their part to play so in one way or another we all need each other.

Even after 'savage cuts' to his/her pension, a newly qualified doctor can still look forward to retiring on £68,000.

Doctors are important, but my heart isn't bleeding for them somehow.

It's a darn sight more than teachers, engineers etc etc get.

Whatever your political allegiance, you've got to do the maths & realise it's just not sustainable.

I don't understand why people find it so difficult to understand, people have stopped blaming Brown for everything and now its all the bankers fault, but it doesn't matter who's fault the current economic crisis is the fact is we are here and it has to be dealt with. I don't think there is a person in the country who wouldn't like a rise, but some sectors of society think they are a cut above the rest of us and think they can blackmail the rest of us. Pay for some has got completely out of control with some council officials on ridicules money, how can you have a council official earning more than the Prime Minister and that is just one example and the only way forward is to reduce these silly remuneration packages to a more realistic level.
