A HAMPSHIRE eye charity is asking people to take greater responsibility for their eyesight.

It comes after research by the Royal College of Optometrists revealed that more than five million British residents either cannot remember when they had their eyes tested, or believed it has been ten years since they were last tested.

Tessa Barrett, chief executive of Bishopstoke -based eye charity Open Sight, said: “If we are not careful, this nation will be suffering visual impairment of epidemic proportions, when it is one area of our health that we can do something about.

“We would like to encourage everyone to get their eyes tested regularly. We have an opportunity through early detection to manage the risk and apprehend any potential condition.”

Open Sight made several recommendations for people to look after their eyes which included quitting smoking, eating greens and fish, keeping fit and making sure you get your eyes tested every two years.
