IT STRETCHES 796 metres across the River Itchen but when it was built 30 years ago it only had one purpose in mind - to be practical.
Now there are calls to bring the grey, concrete bridge to life by giving it a touch of colour and a new lease.
Adding lights, colourful water fountains and even controversial laser beams to make it stand out as a prominent landmark of the city have all been suggested.
Civic leaders, residents and artists have all come forward to call for a make-over for the 28-metre high road bridge.
It comes just two days after the Daily Echo revealed how users are still being charged for crossing the bridge despite it being paid for four times over - bringing in £50m in tolls with no plans to scrap them.
