NEIGHBOURING residents have been angered by students congregating to smoke on streets around Peter Symonds College, Winchester.

Residents on roads near the sixth form college have said around a hundred youngsters daily gather on their streets. They say they leave butts in the street and make a noise, which disturbs residents.

“Why should the college stop smoking on their premises and then push the problem on to us?”

College neighbour, Gunilla Jones.

Lesley Forrest, of Hatherley Road, said: "It's outrageous. It's dispersing the problem from the college to the neighbours. There's a sea of cigarette butts."

Dr Forrest added there were students on her street before school, at lunch and during morning and afternoon breaks.

She said the college had sent teachers out to address the problem but that it only succeeded in moving the students further down the road.

Gunilla Jones, of Cranworth Road, said: "Why should the college stop smoking on their premises and then push the problem on to us?"

The college said they have prohibited students from smoking on site, in anticipation of an impending law change.

From October 1, it will be illegal to sell tobacco to under-18s and principal Neil Hopkins said the college could not be seen to encourage or condone smoking.

Mr Hopkins said: "I do realise it's causing annoyance and we're doing what we can. We're hoping that after October 1, it will be harder to obtain cigarettes.

Does he realise that during the school term increasing number in the upper-sixth will reach 18? What a silly comment to make.

surely if you buy a house near a college you would anticipate some noise from youngsters?

If, instead of complaining, these people went out and got a job they wouldn't be sat at home during school hours.

Problem solved, get a job wingeing scroungers !

yes completeley because the only time anyone works ever is between 9am and 5 pm ! what planet do you live on? although i do agree they are going a bit over the top complaining about a few students smoking - bet they were all for the big smoking ban! its not like they are intimidating anyone and its in the middle of the day!

My son goes to said college, and i must admit it is a bit awkward driving around there what with young girls actually sitting in the road whilst having a puff. You ought to try negotiating the area about 08:20 or 16:45, its like a scene from the day after tomorrow with everybody trying to evacuate the area in a mass exodus. HILARIOUS !!!!!

Bereweeke Rd has fewer residential properties in such a close proximity to the college.

It won't stop them taking a shortcut through Hatherly and Cranworth to get to the station, but then that's always been the case.

So is a sixth form college now going to impose a detention style punishment if the students are caught smoking?

So they wanted the smoking ban out, then complain about people on the street, where else are these people supposed to smoke you dummies!

You should see all the fag butts outside the hospital, at the top of Dale Valley Road!
Its know as the 'smoking area' by staff and visitors. The ground is totally covered with fag butts! Occasionally it is cleaned up but I don't hear any of the local residents complaining there though.

The point is it will be illegal to sell to under 18 year olds. They can still legally smoke at 16.

So does this mean that the over 18's will need to "gift" fags to their younger friends to stay within the law? The notices I have seen are a bit unclear on this.

Presumably the same people that supply drink to under 18's will supply fags.

Once again the laws of this country are seen to be farcicle and pandering to hysterical whingers. Smoking should be discouraged through education, not unworkable bans. Should have stuck to 'Smoking Areas' and allowed people to choose.

The answer is simple. If you see student butts in the street, kick them as hard as you can!
