TRIBUTES have been paid to a Southampton sewerman who spent 45 years working in the maze of sewers beneath the city.

Sid Whitcombe was known for his knowledge of the city's 1,000-mile labyrinth of sewers as a drainage engineer. His son Alan Whitcombe said: "Everyone knew him and he was very popular. I remember just after he retired 20 years ago an area of Lordshill was flooded.

"The fire service took two days trying to find a blockage and they asked him for help because he knew the sewers better than anyone. He fixed the problem in half an hour."

Sid, 80, died at a Southampton nursing home after suffering from bronchitis. His funeral took place in the city.

I will never forget the day we went on a school trip to meet Sid.
The guy was amazing, he had been working the sewers so long he knew everyones "business".
As a turd floated by he said:
"Thats one of Jones the butchers, you can tell by the colour that he eats well and there are even little bits of sawdust in it."
"Ooh, that one is from the old lady in the sweet shop, if you look close you can see the dolly mixtures in it."
"Ooh, oh, this next one is one of my wifes!" he shouted.
"How can you tell from here?" asked one of my classmates.
"Look, she has tied my sandwiches too it, bless her."

RIP Sid.

A glowing eulogy and tribute to a great and skillful man. In his line of work he often must of had a huge job on his hands.

I remember just after he retired 20 years ago an area of Lordshill was flooded.

So Lordshill was full of unpleasant turds even then!
