THE remains of Sid the sycamore will be unceremoniously scattered across the borough of Eastleigh.

A year-long campaign to save the 72-year-old tree ended in defeat when it was given the chop on Easter Monday to make way for a new dance studio at The Point.

As revealed by the Daily Echo the cost of felling the tree and bringing in security for the five-hour long operation was about £3,000.

Sid will be turned into wood mulch but campaigners are angry that there will be no permanent memorial to a much-loved tree which was planted to celebrate Eastleigh becoming a borough.

They say the tree, on the edge of the Leigh Road Recreation Ground, was an important part of the borough's heritage and history.

F reelance photographer Matthew Myatt, who spearheaded the Save Sid campaign, said: "It would have been right to recycle this wood into a park bench as a lasting memorial to Sid."

In his bid to save the controversial tree Mr Myatt had climbed into the branches and staged a ten-hour vigil.

An Eastleigh Council spokesman said: "Wood from the sycamore tree will be turned into mulch and will be used at various locations throughout the borough to help suppress weeds and conserve water."

The council have not specified where these sites will be but there are likely to be in open space areas to help stop weeds attacking the local landscape.

Mulch is a protective cover placed over the soil which controls weeds by blocking the sunlight and also acts as a temperature gauge.

Its a bloody tree

Only a small group of people cared. These people opt in and out of society when it suits them.

When they want a bloody tree saving or need emergency dental work they are all in with the normal folk.

When it comes to working, contributing and paying their way they are suddenly only interested in themselves.

People moan about kids not having anything to do (bad parenting, if you cant afford kids and cant keep them enteretained, dont have them) but then someone trys to add something can enjoy, they moan about a single bloody tree

Boo hoo, join the real world people

Let's see - this is a tree, not human ashes. The World has gone mad - or at least a few tree-huggers in Eastleigh.

The tree should not have been cut down IMO - but once felled should anyone really worry where the mulch ends up.

Interesting that the remain will be spreed across open green spaces, they better hurry and do this as at the rate the council are stealing these open green spaces they will be left a hell of a lot of Sid and no where to put it.!

Well nearly all of Sid will be lost.. However, thanks to the contractor who cut Sid down and is now very pleased to have mad £2000.00 this bank holiday, we have managed to save rather large sections of Sid which we are having made into a sculpture by a local artist that will be on open display together with all the history of Sid the tree and the events that lead to its destruction. Sid may be gone, but we will have a record and some of Sid for the future children of the borough to see what has been done to this town in the name of Dance for the 7% of people will use this new extension. O and Paul b perhaps instead of trying to be cleaver and claiming its only a tree, 57.2% of people said Sid should not have been cut down. (Echo Poll) so your in the minority, people wanted this tree saved, and its not just a tree, its about the rights of people which have been now proven to have been abused again by your employer.

An echo poll means nothing. With anything like this you always get the NIMBYS coming out in force to say they want it, normal folk really didnt give two hoots, if they did there would be more than a handful of people fannying about at the base of the tree.

Making a sculpture from "sid"? Jesus, get over it, what a waste of money, i bet your the sort that would then moan about something else not having enought money spent on it but happy to have a wooden sculpture commisioned.

And for the record i do not work for the council, I payed attention at school.

I'm in full agreement with Paul B.

The Echo poll means nothing. If you asked for the opinion with Eastleigh Borough, I bet most wouldn't give two hoots.

I bet they'd care that pandering to your own whim and self-promotion has cost the tax-payer £3,000, though.

The hypocrisy of your post, Matthew, that the contractor made £2,000 by working on a Bank Holiday when it's your fault.

And Matthew, stop calling a bloody tree "Sid". It is only a tree.

Yes well said Paul B. Matthew -you shouldn't anthropomorphise a tree - it doesn't look good.

Paul claims not to work for the council, but his IP address is.. Wait for it.. Eastleigh Borough Council. Hmmmm. A lair as well as stupid. Matthew, well done you. At least you made your point, where was Paul, notice he was not there saying chop the tree down. Wait a min, he was there, he was hiding in the building with all the other cowards.
