Man appears in court charged with sex attacks

A MAN appeared in court this morning charged with the rape of a Southampton schoolgirl 13 years ago.

Derek Gordon Young, 52, spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth when he appeared before Southampton magistrates.

He is charged with a series of sex attacks on women dating back to 1990.

Young was arrested by officers at his home address in Somerstown, Portsmouth, on Wednesday and was charged last night.

He faced Southampton magistrates charged with raping a 14-year-old girl at Southampton sports centre in 1994, the attempted rape of a woman outside a Portsmouth nightclub in 1990 and the indecent assault of a woman in Portsmouth in 1993.

The charges follow a lengthy investigation by Hampshire's Major Crime Department into historic sex attacks.

Young was remanded in custody and will appear at Southampton Crown Court on April 4 for a preliminary hearing.
