IT'S an exotic bird with a 1,000-year-old reputation as a marvel of traditional Chinese medicine.

The rare and unusually coloured fowl is said to contain immune system boosting properties.

Now an award-winning Southampton butcher has added the Black Boned Silky Fowl to his counter. However, those eager to sample it unusual black meat, black bones and black skin face a five-week waiting list.

Simon Broadribb of Upton Butchers in Winchester Road has started to source the free-range birds from a Romsey breeder.

"We were determined to get hold of them. It's a rare bird and tastes nice, although a little sweet. Demand has been high," said Simon, who is shown left with one of the birds.

The chicken has white feathers that feel as smooth as silk but is completely black underneath when skinned.
