More New Forest villages will be conservation zones

NEW FOREST: Even new satellite dishes will need special permission More villages will be conservation zones NATIONAL Park chiefs have approved plans to create two more conservation areas in the New Forest to protect the area from "creeping urbanisation".

Another 21 villages will be covered by strict regulations governing the type of alterations that can be carried out to houses and other buildings.

In future even minor modifications such as the installation of a satellite dish and the construction of a porch will need planning permission.

Two new conservation areas in the Bramshaw and Boldre areas were given the green light earlier this year.

Now the New Forest National Park Authority (NPA) has agreed that the Netley Marsh area and all the Avon Valley villages between Hale and Hangersley should be given similar protection.

Peter Frost told fellow NPA members: "This is the beginning of safeguarding the long-term future of the New Forest.

"The aim is to stop the creeping urbanisation that is eroding the special qualities of the area. If we can halt that we will protect our heritage for generations to come.

"I'm very passionate about the creation of these new conservation areas. I think it's the best thing the authority has done so far."

Roger Heap added: "The alternative is a free-for-all without regulations restricting the things you don't want to see."

Support Referring to a recent consultation exercise members said almost everyone who attended a series of public exhibitions supported the new conservation zones.

Former NPA chairman Ted Johnson said: "When it comes to altering their property, people will be happy to sacrifice a little bit of their freedom if it means their neighbours have to do the same."

Members were addressed by Peter Roberts, vice-chairman of the New Forest Association. He said: "This is a real step towards conserving the area that we all care deeply about.

"Today is a great opportunity to ensure that the character of the New Forest is there to be passed on to future generations."

Communities in the two new conservation areas: Forest North East - Bartley, Copythorne, Netley Marsh, Winsor and Woodlands.

Western Escarpment - Blissford, Castle Hill, Frogham, Godshill, Gorley Common, Hatchet Green, Hale Park, Highwood, Hangersley, Hyde Common, Mockbeggar, North Gorley, Ogdens, South Gorley, Stuckton and Woodgreen.

Communities in the conservation areas approved earlier this year Forest Central - Bramshaw, Brook, Cadnam, Cadnam Green, Canterton, Furzley, London Minstead, Minstead, Newbridge, Newtown, Penn Common and Stoney Cross.

Forest South East - Boldre, East Boldre, East End, Norley Wood, Pylewell Park, South Baddesley and Walhampton.

They didn't say that porches or satellite dishes were banned but would need planning permission in future. Planning applications = income stream.
