Man held in hunt for park sex attacker

DETECTIVES have made an arrest in their hunt for a sex attacker who assaulted a young woman in a Southampton park.

As reported in the Daily Echo, the 19- year-old student was walking home from a nightclub in the early hours of Bank Holiday Monday when she was grabbed from behind and pulled to the ground.

A passer-by heard her screams and intervened and the man ran off.

The area in Palmerston Park where the attack took place was sealed off as officers carried out investigations at the scene.

Last night police revealed they had detained a man at an address in Southampton who has been questioned in connection with the incident.

The 29-year-old, who is known to live locally, was later bailed by police who say they are continuing with enquiries.

The attack is the latest in a number of similar assaults in city parks in recent years. It prompted police to warn women not to walk alone or make themselves vulnerable at particularly quiet times of day.

Detectives in Shirley are investigating the attack which happened at about 6am. Anyone with information is urged to call police on 0845 045 4545.
