Teenagers risked their own lives to throw themselves off a Hampshire road bridge 25 feet into water below.

The youngsters ignored safety warnings to take part in the perilous craze of tombstoning.

Lining up one by one a group of around ten youths straddled the railing on the Redbridge Causeway before jumping into the Test river - just yards from the stone base of the bridge.

It was one of a number of scenes across the county where youngsters were risking their lives to cool off, including jumping off the bridge over the River Avon on the A31 at Ringwood.

Today a 20-year-old man was left fighting for life in Southampton General Hospital after plunging 30ft from a Hampshire pier Police are investigating whether the man jumped or fell into three feet of water from South Parade Pier in Southsea yestrday afternoon.

The coastguard safety plea has also been echoed by Nick Biddlecombe, who was left wheelchair-bound when he shattered his neck in a jump at Lepe Beach eight years ago.

Nick, who is now 25 and requires round the clock care at his home in Cedric Close, Blackfield, said: "It is stupid to do it.

"I would say to those kids, look what happened to me'. You can go from normal to being wheelchair-bound in a matter of seconds."

Solent Coastguard watch officer Alan Waters said tombstoning was "pure stupidity".

"The people who do this are otherwise known as idiots," he said.

"The stark reminder is that it can end in paralysis or even death if they are unconscious in the water."

  • The Daily Echo did not encourage youngsters to take part in this activity and does not condone these actions.

Woohoo! It must officially be summer if the Echo are reporting the Redbridge jumpers... AGAIN.

Surely it's up to Parents and Police to stop these kids? Although it's been going on for decades and probably will continue to do so.

AHHHHHHHHHHGGGGGGGG

WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY am I supposed to be bothered.

Are they going any thing which effects me?????
no
Are thier actions going to kill or hurt an innocent bystander????
no
Will they pick up the tab for they're mistakes??
Yep.
As a child I did things which may not of been what would be discribed as smart. However I did them on my own free will and expected death, injury or at least a rollocking from my fokes if I screwed up or got caught.

Let these kids be kids. Let them make mistakes, they'll learn from it and be better people for it.

The article wasn't asking you to beothered - just highlighting the dangers. Perhaps if parents read it and the fact that someone has been seriously injured apparently by tombstoning in Portsmouth, then perhaps they would be more responsible. If seriously injured in ties up hospital beds and resources, and if parylised then further ties up much needed resources. It is idiotic in the extreme and soem othe rperson has got to pick up the pieces.

there is potetial risk you can see what youre jumping in to at the quays you dont no whats down there

J.Smith, Southsea says...
12:52pm Mon 12 May 08

The differance is the "picking up the pieces part"

The "Tombstoning" locations in Portsmouth are rediculous, the hot rocks (sea forts in Old Portsmouth) have a rocky foreshore hidden beneath the waves. And as that lad proved yesterday, South Parade Pier is extremely tidal.

By all means risk yourself, but what about the Police, Ambulance crews and volunteer lifeguards and RNLI who attended yesterdays incident.

Do you realise what an unconscious, foaming at the mouth casualty with a potentially broken neck/spine looks like?

Why should volunteer personel have to go through the emotional trauma of dealing with that kind of thing, just so kids can have fun?

HK Boy, hong kong says...
1:00pm Mon 12 May 08

I haven't read the article not the comments; but, crikey, c'mon are kids allowed to have fun these days without the media and other organisations putting a critical remark about anthing that anyones does.

There must be thousands of people who did this before over the years, for sure i know i'm one; but I reckon the headlines back in the good old days when people had lives and enjoyed themselves was something like " Kids cooling off and having fun"

People, not just of the UK but the world; life is something you have one shot at and bleeding well enjoy it!!!

Keep having fun kids BUT BE CAREFUL and keep that smile on yer face --- real life is better than a video game

As this occurs every year do you think that this would represent a residual danger to children. If so then it would be up there with crossing roads, doing drugs, screwing around with knives and getting involved with politics.

All dangerous with some very horrible outcomes if it goes wrong, which most kids will mess around with.

To overstate the dangers to kids only gives you apathy. No doubt the parnets of the kids have already told them not to do it so the children are using thier own decision. If the parents haven't expressed an opinion to the kids then it's either out of apathy or they did it as kids and don't want to be hypercritical. So having it in the paper is probably not making much difference there.

As for picking up the pieces and saving beds in the NHS or saving out precious children here is a more intereting thing. The children who doing this are at least being active, They seem to be (as I've seen them) fit, happy, healthy kids. So with that in mind they will less at risk in later years than the overweight, fat blobbs which this country is so desperate to turn out. Save the kids????? Switch off the games machine, kick the fat little ####### out of the house, tell them go jumping in the river as it is isn't going to kill them unless they don't know the difference between low and high tide.

Schools should play their part with the education too.

Why don't we put up signs there, prehaps prosuting parents if they jump off.

I feel for the paramedics, seeing a maimed youngster shatters them emotionally.

I actually think that its great that kids are still able to enjoy themselves in this stupid "nanny-state" country, kids are wrapped too much in cotton wool and need to find their own entertainment which doesnt involve a playstation or computer etc. However, I was in Southsea yesterday when the lad jumped/fell from the pier and I just worried for the poor mum that would have received a call about her son!!

What are jids and kackers? Is it chav talk for knuckle-dragging skanks? Thought so.
But you're right in one way, genius: most posh people I know spend their free time enjoying Southampton's diving boards - I frequently tell them they should save their £3 and just leap 35ft in to a sh!t filled river next to one of the busiest flyovers in Hampshire. Silly....billies.

first of all you need to know the facts about the place, has where those kids are jumping there,s a good 8 to 11 feet of water at low tide that 25 feet in height is taken from low water to the top railing so theres plently of water there to do it, and looking at that picture it looks like the tide is 3/4 of the way up,next how many people have been injurd jumping of them bridges i personaly know of none apart from a few red bellys where they belly flop in the water, there been more accidents at the old southampton cental swimming baths connected to jumping than there,s been on the redbridge bridges, the main deaths on that river has been though drowning and most of them are people who learn to swim in pools then go and think they can swim the same way in rivers, learning to swim in rivers makes you a wizer and stronger swimmer

Paula, Marchwood says...

When was the last time someone got hurt jumping of the causeway? The story was because of an accident at Southsea? Kid always jump off bridges into water, always will in hot weather. Perhaps a marker to show them when its too shallow, and a check for shopping trolleys? Kids and mucking around in water go together, better that than glued to the games consoles. When I was a kid it was Jackie Spencers bridge we jumped off, although my parents would have killed me if they knew I did it.

These comments do make me laugh. It's the same every year. The "we're only going to hurt ourselves" argument is quite possibly one of the most spectacularly dumb ones going - but it is bloody funny.

I would be inclined to leave these morons to their own devices, but unfortunately our emergency services feel an obligation to help the injured, even if they have done it to themselves.

We live in a society that prides itself on its "rights", (If I had a pound for everytime I've heard the comment "I know my rights" from people who clearly have no such idea, I'd be, ooh, about £5 better off) which has somehow ended up as being interpreted as "the right to behave like a total selfish numpty of the worst order."
People want to reserve the right to behave like a dumbarse - fine, but please do it in a less potentially messy way.

You appear to be quite happy in allowing your son to put himself, and others, in danger.
I wonder if you will still have the same view, if he were to sustain a serious injury.
Or would you look to shift blame to the authorities for not doing enough to prevent people jumping off the bridge.

They may not be doing anything that affects you directly, but as responsible adults we all have a duty to shape the values and actions of our society. Children need guidance. Yes, it is the parents responsibility. But in the absence of them, should you turn the other cheek and walk the other way? I have just stopped my car on Mansbridge after seeing children tombstoning. I told them about the incidents over the weekend. Yes, they ignored me. Yes, they promptly walked over to the railings and jumped. But at least I tried to influence their choices. If everyone decided what goes on in society isn't their problem, there will be anarchy.

good for you for stopping and explaning but its not tombstoning that belongs in one place in southsea, and while you where there did you check to see how high they are and how deep the water is,jumping in rivers like at mansbridge and redbridge is much safer than jumping into a over crowned swimming pool, the water in the river probley more cleaner to

I love all these posts demanding basically that everyone live a sanitised, dull, ultra-safe, boring risk-free life. As far as I can tell, it's mainly people who, despite their fervent aspirations and promises to the contrary, simply grew up and turned into their parents. Have you all forgotten what life as a kid was like? When I was growing up, it was all climbing trees, jumping into or off of things, playing in fields, getting into scrapes and the like. And guess what? I never once felt the need to get hammered on cheap booze and kick the sh!t out of a total stranger in order to enjoy myself.

Life without risk is pointless. Don't go bleating about "my taxes pay for this" and what-not, simply because someone else did something you yourself are too staid and worrisome to do, and came a cropper. You'll all be burdens to the taxpayer eventually. Think on that
