Help me to protect this beautiful breed

A HAMPSHIRE woman is fighting to save a breed of dog that is often left homeless through no fault of its own.

Nikki Barrett, from Romsey, is a volunteer for the Friends of Akitas Trust.

It works to save Akitas from council pounds and the risk of being destroyed, paying for them to stay in kennels until a home is found.

Many Akitas end up as strays because owners buy them as cuddly puppies but fail to realise they soon grow into 50kg, strong adult dogs.

Nikki, pictured with Akitas Reggi, left, and Suki, said "This is a gorgeous breed, affectionate and intelligent. They are just misunderstood because they are so big."

Well done Nikki, I have had a few of these dogs over the years and they are wonderful just like you say. Good luck and I will soon be looking to home one.

Nikki! well done for raising this. We have Siberian Huskies which suffer similar predicaments and there’s no need for it as long as people do there homework before buying any dog!
