A MAJOR investigation was under way today after a woman was raped in Southampton city centre.
Detectives say the 24-year-old was sat on the pavement outside the entrance to a nightclub when two men approached and dragged her to an underpass.
The sex attack is thought to have lasted for several minutes before the two men jumped in a car and sped off.

The rape happened in the early hours of yesterday morning, a short distance from The Edge nightclub in an underpass in Compton Walk.
Throughout the day the area was cordoned off by police while scenes of crime officers searched the area for evidence.
Enquiries were also carried out at houses in the immediate area until the scene was reopened last night.
The victim spent yesterday being interviewed by police and is said to be "traumatised" by what had happened.
Detective Inspector Roger Middle, leading the investigation called Operation Graham, said: "This was a violent attack by two men on a lone woman who had been sat on the pavement near to The Edge nightclub.
"We are determined to find those responsible. I would appeal to anyone who can help us catch these men to come forward to help with our enquiries."
Police are particularly keen to speak to anyone who came out of the nightclub or was in the vicinity between 12.30am and 1.15am yesterday. They are also trying to trace a man and a woman who offered a light for the victim's cigarette as she sat on the pavement shortly before the attack.
Witnesses are also being sought who saw a clean dark blue car speed off from Compton Walk turning left into St Mary's Road.

It was only this time last week that i made a comment regarding a story where police had advised people walking through the park in central southampton. They called it a 'no go zone' it was a pathetic plea seeing as though they could have two police constables walking around the park at all times. Now another rape has taken place, i'd like to know the statistics involving rapes in Southampton because it seems to be happening a lot. I suppose the police are going to advise us not to walk home from pubs/clubs next. Granted, it is pretty silly for a girl/woman to walk around on her own but its getting so bad that the only way we can stop these horrific crimes is to castrate the cowards... Am i being harsh?? I hope so, these streets are getting beyond the joke... It will get worse if the judges and MP's are not careful. Vigilantes will have to take charge, and id be more than happy to deal with these pondlife types.

"A MAJOR investigation was underway today after a woman was raped in Southampton city centre"
A rape is a very serious and despicable crime. However, we must get this into perspective.
It is, at the moment, an alleged rape, and until more facts are known, and people charged, and found guilty, should remain as such.

Simple answer to why didnt police prevent, not enough of them to cope with all the idiots out there.
If she was outside the nightclub sitting on the pavement (a bit worse for wear I guess) when 2 men picked her up and carried her away... where were the bouncers, and where were her friends?

You're not accusing anyone of anything until people are arrested - then it's most definitely an alleged rape.

Whilst the fuzz were giving him a talking to, a chav in a Cosworth drove past and the other officer who was chatting to me said 'that is someone we really want to pull over as he is the local drug pusher'.
I then stated the obvious consequence of pulling us over for a fag butt whilst the serious criminals roll on by. He agreed but basically said the driving officer resented the fag butt offence but pulled us because we were in a large BMW Alpina!
This shows that the police waste too much time making a point and slapping people's wrists when the real criminals can go about there day.
Frustrating.
And yes, he got a fine and has learnt his lesson.

Why do people always blame "the police"? You should not tarr all police officers with the same brush.
Many people have strong views on the subject of speeding and speed cameras but why is that argument is always brought up when a serious crime is reported and people ask why the police are not chasing real criminals?

They are revenue chasers at the moment. I am not saying that is by choice, it has been forced upon them by targets but it is still a Police issue.
Ok, fair enough I can't say all Police are like that but I am willing to bet that most people's experiences of the Police would involve something like my story than a heroic boy in blue chasing down a crim....I've never seen them chasing anyone.

It is interesting to note though that as we have seen on television recently the police (well certainly Humberside police)have vast resources (helicopters, innumerable cars, high powered motorbikes) to persue joyriders and motorists who have committed offences contrary to the road traffic act whilst apparently not to provide sufficient manpower to flood the streets at night with beat officers. Of course recruiting prople to ride around on flash bikes or to drive Subaru Imprezzas is a lot easier than persuading people to sign up to walk around Southampton.

Such a shame that people can't walk the streets in safety. As for comments about the Police and bouncers etc. They can't be everywhere at once. At the time of day this happened they were probably dealing with drunken yobs beating each other up.
The Edge Nightclub is one of the safest clubs around, but the bouncers are there to monitor activity on the premises - not outside on a public pavement.
I just hope the victim gets the help and support she needs at this time.

Thursday last week walking past the cenotaph in Southampton, a drunk laying on one of the benches, shouting at people. So when a policeman approached it appeared that he would sort it - not a chance he nodded at him and wandered on. One older lady said to me - probably going to get him another drink !
