PLANS have been unveiled to revamp Southampton's High Street next month as part of a £6m project to connect a series of roads from the city centre to the waterfront.
The works, costing more than £1m, will repave the busy street, widen the pavements, plant new trees as well as adding street furniture and new lighting.
The council claims the works, part of the so-called "north-south spine project", will "radically enhance the area"
and will be a "boost for businesses as well as shoppers".
Cabinet member for environment and transport Councillor Gavin Dick said: "These works are essential for the High Street. After they are completed the area will be much safer for pedestrians and vehicles."
The works are expected to last for ten months, during which the High Street will be made one way.
A public exhibition is being held at the Dolphin Hotel in High Street today.

To be fair, the fact that you have to walk through cigarette smoke is because people like you complained that you wanted all smokers out of buildings. You can't then complain when they smoke outside.

Widening the pavements ? Presumably by narrowing the roads, so how does that make it safer ? I suppose they\'ll get rid of roadside parking....
Also, what about the other £5M in the £6M scheme, presumably this will be to build a load of flats in dirty great tower blocks ?

You can't drink on the High Street anyway, it's one of those new-fangled Controlled Zones. I can't ever remember being attacked by bikers on London Road... Are you sure you weren't watching Mad Max?
Street furniture jsut encourages all day drinking and smoking. There are always drunks in the area. The atmosphere in London Road is horrendous. Some days, there are fights and then you have to walk through the cigarette smoke. One is also attacked by bullies on bikes. It is not pleasant to walk in to Southampton along this route. I now use the bus hardly leading to a healthy lifestyle.

So, what they are going to do is to re-open all the roads that they closed off to traffic to make pedestian areas, then widen the payments... though I am muchly delighted to be aloowed to ride my bike down through the percinct without some pedestrian shouting at me to dismount, I am concerned at the cost to the public of undoing all the pedestrianised areas of the high street.

When is the council going to realise that what southampton really needs is a public transportation system that connects all the main parts of southampton! My suggestion would be a mono rail type that could be raised above ground to reduce the traffic congestion that is only going to get worse from Ocean Village to the station! The longer time goes on the more disruption it will cause to put in!
