LATEST TRAFFIC REPORTS FOR THE NEW FOREST
Anke just pipped for BBC musicians’ final

AN outstanding New Forest clarinet player has narrowly missed out on a place in the BBC's Young Musician of the Year competition.

Thousands of viewers saw 18-year-old Anke Batty, pictured, showing off her talent against four other talented players during the woodwind category final on digital channel BBC4 on Monday evening.

The teenager, from Beaulieu Road, between Lyndhurst and Beaulieu in the New Forest, who also plays piano and saxophone, reached the woodwind final while studying law at Oxford University.

At stake was the chance to compete against four other musicians at the national final at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff this Saturday and Sunday.

Edinburgh student and flute player David Smith took the place.

A member of the National Youth Orchestra for seven years, Anke is currently principal clarinet of the Oxford University Orchestra.

She gained three A grades in her A-levels at King Edward VI School in Southampton last summer.

Previously she reached the final stages of an X-Factor-style BBC competition to find the next orchestral superstar.

Anke just failed to convince the judges that she deserved a place among the best nine entrants on BBC2's Classical Star series.
