TWO parliamentary hopefuls in Southampton were quizzed on taxes and care at the city's pensioner forum.

Labour's Rowenna Davis and Darren Paffey faced questions at a meeting at the Civic Centre yesterday (Mon, Feb 9).

Romsey and Southampton North candidate Cllr Paffey was questioned about the party's plans for health and care if they win May's General Election.

He said the so-called mansion tax, a crack-down on tax avoidance and more contributions for tobacco companies would fund more than 5,000 new home carers, while saying more should be done to integrate health and social care.

Several members of the forum quizzed the candidates over cracking down on multi-national companies' tax avoidance.

And Southampton Itchen candidate Rowenna Davis said tackling “disgraceful” tax avoidance would be a party priority, arguing that it was unfair on small and medium-sized businesses in the city who paid full tax.

The forum is set to hear from Liberal Democrat and UKIP candidates at its next meeting at the Civic Centre at 2pm on March 9.
