QUESTIONS have been raised over whether a Hampshire councillor who hosted sex parties at his home should take on a mayoral role.

David Fuller has put himself forward for the Deputy Mayor position on Portsmouth City Council.

It has prompted concerns from several other councillors over the details of his private life.

The Daily Echo revealed in 2013 how Cllr Fuller's home in The Avenue, Fareham was the location for £15-per-head monthly sex parties that included activities such as beating and whipping.

But Lib Dem Cllr Fuller has maintained nothing illegal ever happened, no investigation took place and he is “more than capable” of representing the city.

And he said such parties have not been held at his home since the details were made public.

Portsmouth City Council members have voted unanimously in favour of making Cllr Fuller the Deputy Mayor for the 2015/16 years - which makes him eligible to be the next Lord Mayor should he retain his seat at next year's elections.

Since the vote UKIP and Labour councillors have urged the Lib Dem group to rethink Cllr Fuller's suitability for the role.

But he has received support from Lib Dem colleagues and Conservatives, including deputy Tory leader Cllr Luke Stubbs who said Cllr Fuller should be “given the chance” to get on with the job.

A final decision will be made at a mayor-making ceremony on May 19.
