A MAJOR landmark has been reached in the creation of Southampton's £40m arts complex.

A topping out ceremony marked the completion of work on the structure, it was announced that Nuffield Theatre will be the final organisation to occupy the building.

The city centre building will open next year and feature a 447-seat theatre, studio, rehearsal spaces, education spaces and a cafe bar and bistro.

The complex on the site of the former Tyrrell and Green department store will also contains apartments and a number of bars and restaurants.

City council leader Simon Letts said: “It's wonderful to see the project get to this stage, it is over 15 years since the first concept was mooted.

"I look forward to it coming to fruition and completing the latest phase of the City's Cultural Quarter, as part of our City Centre Master plan. Grosvenor has done a great job in developing a scheme that will meet our aspirations for a distinctive and vibrant City.

“This brings together key partnerships with already committed and established tenants, University of Southampton's John Hansard Gallery and City Eye that will excel in providing a vibrant and original arts programme for the city.”
