HEALTH secretary Jeremy Hunt has vowed to visit a Hampshire hospital after being asked to take action over service provision.

Fareham MP Suella Fernandes pressed Mr Hunt at a House of Commons question time event and described Fareham Community Hospital as “underused and half-built”.

The hospital, based in Sarisbury, was opened in 2010 and Ms Fernandes has campaigned to help increase the services it offers.

Addressing Mr Hunt in the House of Commons she said: “Fareham Community Hospital is an example of Labour’s expensive PFI gone wrong.

“At a cost of £28 million it remains underused and half-built and subject to complex governance structures.

“What will my right honourable friend do to enable better use of this facility to allow provision of a minor injuries unit and a GP practice and more primary care?”

Mr Hunt replied: “Well she is right that regrettably the PFI projects under the last Labour Government did create a lot of unsustainable debt, but I know that her local Clinical Commissioning Group is meeting with GP practices and working with community health partnerships to see if they can progress the idea that she is campaigning for, and I hope to visit her in the near future to discuss it myself.”
