TIME is running out to have your say on whether the UK remains in the European Union.

There’s just one week to go until the registration deadline to vote in the referendum on June 23.

Officials are urging those who aren't registered to make sure they sign up before June 7.

The fight between the Brexit and Remain camps has intensified in recent weeks, with several political heavyweights visiting Hampshire to put their cases to the county's residents.

Daily Echo:

Prime Minister David Cameron and Chancellor George Osborne delivered a speech at B&Q's headquarters in Chandlers Ford, warning that leaving the EU would be the "self-destruct option".

And days later rival Tory Boris Johnson told a rally in Winchester city centre that "this is the moment by taking back control where we show we can stand on our own two feet and do better than ever before".

Anyone who is already registered to vote will receive a poll card by Wednesday, May 25 but not everyone who was eligible to vote at the elections on May 5 will also be eligible to vote in the EU Referendum.

Registering to vote has been designed to be quick and easy with people needing their National Insurance number, date of birth and address to hand.

Mark Heath, Regional Counting Officer for the South East Region, said: “Time is running out to have your say in the referendum on the UK’s membership of the European Union. I would like to encourage everyone in Southampton to register by the deadline if you have not done so already.

“Our message is simple: you can’t vote if you aren’t on the electoral roll. Registering to vote is easy and only takes a few minutes online.”

On June 23 voters will be asked to put a cross in either the ‘Remain a member of the European Union’ or the ‘Leave the European Union’ box on their ballot paper.

In the same format as an election there are three options for how to vote, in person by taking a poll card to the nearest polling station, by post where applications to vote by post must be submitted by May 8 at 5pm or by proxy, where a trusted person votes on someone else’s behalf – this application must be made by June 15 at 5pm.

Anyone who hasn’t registered to vote can visit gov.uk/register-to-vote or call 023 8083 2245 for more information.

The Electoral Commission is also advising voters to think about where they will be on polling day, anyone who is likely to be away on June 23 should consider applying for a postal or proxy vote.
