Tories launch plan to axe free swimming

TORY councillors last night launched their plan to axe free swimming sessions in Southampton under proposals to plug a £13m budget black hole.

And they rejected as inadequate a Government grant to extend the city council’s scheme from under-12s to under-16s.

Other Hampshire councils such as Portsmouth, Winchester and Eastleigh have already pledged to sign up to the venture – intended as a London Olympic 2012 legacy.

The proposal to scrap free swimming sessions at the council’s three pools, part of a number of savings approved for consultation last night, would save the council £160,000 next year.

The scheme was introduced for under sevens two years ago and rolled out further by a Lib Lab budget coalition in April. Around 2,600 kids have registered.

But Tories claim it has a low take-up and that it was too costly, with no significant increase in pool usage.

Cabinet member for resources councillor Jeremy Moulton said they were committed to school sports activities through other schemes.

He said like the “free” bus travel scheme for the over 60s last year the Government had not stumped up enough cash, and was offering to pay only an estimated quarter of the costs for free under-16s swimming.

“Sadly, it is not affordable within our current economic pressures,” he said.

However, capital investment of nearly £600,000 in swimming pools and their machinery, including replacement control panels, filtration and heating pumps, was signed off.

Cabinet member for leisure councillor John Hannides said it underlined the council’s commitment to secure its swimming pools and leisure centres across the city for all residents.

Swimming groups have already condemned the plan to axe free swimming saying it will deprive primary aged kids of a “necessity” and a chance to build life skills and get into sport.

Labour Councillor Don Thomas, whose Coxford ward includes the council’s Oaklands swimming pool, said: “This is lunacy with the Olympics coming our way. This is Tory madness in action.”

The council has agreed to introduce free swimming for over-60s from April with two years of Government funding.

How can it have a low take up AND be too costly? The pools are open anyway (for now at least) so if only a few kids are coming in free it will add very little to the operation cost.

Once again, and I can see I'm going to get as tired of typing this as people are of reading it, this has little to do with money and everything to do with political ideology. As Alec Samuels said on his blog "we don't believe in free stuff". Not even when it benefits the community we were elected to serve.

Children have no votes and most frail and elderly often can't vote, so they become the sitting target for the Tory cuts and sell offs.

But considering most Special Constables are likely to hold right of centre views, thus becoming potential Tory voters, Conservatives are offering abolition of Council Tax for them.

Can legal eagle clever Alec define what is the definition of word BRIBE?

typical lefty views there, especially towards the police. I'd rather them get a discount on council tax than dole scroungers any day. As for the elderly not being able to vote I'm sure postal votes are available in care homes.

As for swimming I can barely afford to pay my council tax, which has doubled in 10 years, so any savings will be welcome.

Savings will not get passed on in council tax or any other form of reductions . £160,00 can be blown quite quickly on a couple of jollies.
I bet J Moulten is just having his strings pulled from above by Alec.
I cannot imagine many of the local councilors wanting this but the bad man says it must be. I bet they dislike him as much as Southampton people.

You appear to have a somewhat naive view of society. Many elderly people live in care homes because they cannot make rational decisions for themselves, such as knowing which political party will best serve their interests.

THE TORY LEADERS OF SOUTHAMPTON COUNCIL ARE SIMPLY HAMMERING THE WEAKEST SECTIONS OF SOCIETY, AND SHOULD BE THOROUGHLY ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES.

As for being barely able to afford to pay your council tax, perhaps you need to reassess your personal expenditure. If you are then still in dire straits, you may qualify for help in paying your council tax from the council. Their benefits department will provide you with the relevant information.
