Tory bid to oust Southampton Labour council leader
5:00pm Tuesday 12th June 2012 in Politics
By Matt Smith, Politics and business reporter
OPPOSITION Tories are demanding an emergency council meeting over claims Southampton’s new Labour council leader misled the public about the resignation of a Cabinet member to avoid political embarrassment.
Conservatives want a meeting to force a motion of no confidence in councillor Richard Williams and remove him as leader for “bringing the council into disrepute”.
Cllr Williams, who yesterday returned to the Civic Centre after spending a week in Brussels on a work trip, welcomed the opportunity to clear up any “confusion”.
He faces a grilling over his announcement of the resignation of his efficiency tsar Cllr Keith Morrell – just two weeks into the job.
In a statement issued through the council Cllr Williams had said Cllr Morrell had quit on health grounds. But within days Cllr Morrell admitted it was a “fiction” he said he had agreed to with Cllr Williams after the leader himself threatened to quit.
Cllr Morrell said he was in fact fighting fit and could not keep up the pretence when friends and family became concerned about his welfare.
The 63-year-old accountant said he had quit in a policy split over the savings and cuts he believes the cash-strapped council will have to make to plug a £46m budget deficit over the next two years.
Cllr Morrell said he had not been consulted on the statement about his resignation and was “amazed” when Cllr Williams then repeatedly denied he was given any other reasons other than ill health.
Five Con-servative councillors – Peter Baillie, Ivan White, John Hannides, John Inglis and Anthony Kolker – have petitioned the Labour mayor Derek Burke to hold an extraordinary council meeting within seven days to debate the saga.
If the mayor refuses they can re-petition under council rules to force one to be convened.
The requisition said: “In view of the real reason for the resignation of Councillor Morrell as Cabinet member for efficiency and innovation, being that he did not agree with the new Labour administration’s proposals to deal with the council’s budget problems and not that he was ill as publicly stated and repeated by the leader of the council, that the leader has brought the council into disrepute and accordingly the council has no confidence in him and resolves to remove him from the office of leader”.
Opposition Tory leader Royston Smith said: “We want to make sure we have all the information in the public domain to get to the bottom of which of these two councillors, elected to an office of trust, is telling the truth.”
Labour councillors were initially gagged by regional party bosses from speaking to the press about the “Morrell story” but later said they had full confidence in Cllr Williams.
Left wing life-time Labour party man Cllr Morrell said he took the job of Cabinet member for efficiency with the intention of protecting jobs and services but could not defend what he called a “dismantling of local government.”
Cllr Williams said: “We want to be transparent. I will certainly support and welcome it. If they want to have that debate let’s get on and do it in the public eye.”
He said it would be a good way to clear up any “level of confusion”.
Cllr Morrell said he echoed Cllr Williams sentiments about a debate and said he stood by his claims.

Did the Tories consider that they were misleading the public when they had internal disputes?
Surely there must be more important matters that should be occupying their minds.

How do we think that vote is going to go then?
What a waste of public money by the infantile Royston Smith. Why should his short man syndrome cost Southampton citizens money?

I still ask that question now .... Is this for the City or Smith ???
.
If we are to have an open debate on this can we also have a Public Hearing on the following.
.
1/ .. Why was £10m of taxpayers money used to prop up the Sea Museum ....... Despite assurances that it would not.
.
2/ .. Why was the decision made to enter into a £50m contract for CCTV despite the Tories having lost the election.
.
3/ .. Can we also find out PUBLICLY why Hannides changed the rules of the Spitfire Memorial AFTER the finalist designs and designers were chosen.
.
Cllrs Peter Baillie, Ivan White, John Hannides, John Inglis and Anthony Kolker and Royston Smith .... i ask again ....... Is this in the interest of the City and its people or just for YOUR PERSONAL SATISFACTION

1)I checked the claims of St Densys ta and Royston Smith was only ever elected as a Tory cllr.
2)Sea City Museum and the CCTV contract. The council has an inquiry panel, it is called the overview and scrutiny panel. I believe it looked at the CCTV contract. There were plenty of questions asked by Labour about Sea City. And now they run the council so if there was anything dodgy don't you think they would release it?
3)Councillors should present the facts to the public. In the same way that Labour when they were the opposition asked questions of the Tory council and in the same way the Unions went on strike and protested against what they saw as an attack on workers rights, so have the Tories the right, indeed the public also to demand to know which councillor was telling the truth.
I would have thought the Labour party mouth pieces on here would agree with their Leader Dr Cllr Williams who says he welcomes it! If he welcomes it and feels he has nothing to hide then why are the Labour supporters on here getting themselves into a right state?

Yeah, of course it is! Had it been the Conservative party you would be calling for Councillor Smith to be flogged in public.
Hide it behind the corridors of the Council that is currently controlled by Labour? Yes, that would be a very democratic and transparent move by the party that is apparently 'for the people' wouldn't it?
'Surely there must be more important matters that should be occupying their minds.'
Yes, I'm sure if they were to drop it all altogether that would be honky dory! I for one believe that the opposition should challenge lies and the misdirection of the Labour council. That's what democracy is supposed to do and I would expect Labour to do the same if the situation was reversed.

1/ Royston stood as an idependant and then was ask to join the Torys, You find the true answer in the Eletrol office and not on Wilki.
Why don't you invesigate what was those leafletts that Royston was handing out, out side school gates.
2/ yes the council do have a inquiry panel, but it was not used for the CCTV or the City Museum well not as yet.
3/ yes the council should present the facts and should keep an open book on all matters, but sadly the Torys and Labour keep a close book on matters that concern Party matters, and this is for internal party matters, and don't concern the council yet, The Council Cabinet is being sorted out and its a matter for the Labour Party to do and not the Tory party to interfer with.

You need to learn the real difference and not that false propaganda stuff that is put out by the Bilderberg group, There are no Socialist Countrys in the World, there as not been one since 1923, theres been Stalinist which is Socialism controlled by Capitalist which is just another form of Captialism. how ever there are countrys that are doing what the UK had between 1945 to 1979 and that was to have a mix of Captislism and Socialism Policy, countrys like China is now, Cuba, Vietnam, India, Venezuela, and it looks like Brazil as join them in having a mix of Capitalism and socialism policy.
And what do all those Countrys have in Common apart from a mix of left and right wing policy, there Economy is doing far better than any country that as 100% Capitalism policy, And its the Socialist Policy that is doing that.
The world as not rejected Socialism the world being told lies about Socialism, from the Bilderberg group and its sheep like your self that they use as propaganda speaders.
You twist words, contradict yourself, pretend your clever by using Google to look up things that you should but don't know.
Oh so now your a Centre to Left Socialist are we?
What exactly has gone wrong in your life to blame everything on Capitalism and 'Right Wingers' (which is another way of saying 'I hate everyone who doesn't hole the same views as I') I don't know, but I take great comfort in knowing that your outdated weird politics will never be taken seriously by any electorate ever.
The world HAS rejected Socialism. You just can't take it, won't believe it. You even believe your own propaganda.
No-one takes you seriously here. Take it somewhere else.
Socialism is not Socialism if controlled by Capitalist that just becomes another band of Capitalism.
Learn the difference, and the fact remains that countrys that do have some sort of Socialism policy are far better off that any country that as 100% caoitalist policy, the facts are out there to see, India Economy doing better, China Economy Doing Better, Vietnam Economy Doing better, Venezuela Economy doing better, even Cuba Economy is fairing better, And Brazil Economy started to improve since they interduce a Socialist Policy.
Just take a look at all the countrys who Economy is failed abd every one of them is 100% Capitalist Policy

For me, if Cllr Morrell didn't want to do the job he was asked to do and resigned then so be it, no need to give any reason whatsoever, apart from he didn't want the job.
If Cllr Williams is found to have lied, then he must fall on his sword, just like I expected Roy to do when he was caught with no valid excise license for his car, changing internet provider so he didn't receive a reminder was for me is no accuse, especially when the excise disc sit on the front of the car your travelling in, did the opposition party at the time call for full council meeting to discuss what is essential a criminal offence carried out by the then leader of the council, no they didn't.

Southampton City Council = 48 Councillors.
Labour = 30
Tories = 16
Lib-Dems = 2
How do we think that vote is going to go then?
What a waste of public money by the infantile Royston Smith. Why should his short man syndrome cost Southampton citizens money?
.
If there was not hypocrisy in NuLabour and it was a party that actually practices what it preaches, instead of behaving like last labour governments under Blair and Brown, it would have immediately at least kicked Cllr. Keith Morrell out
.
Apart from causing embarrassment of his shameless local party Morrell has admitted that he conspired with NuLabour’s local ‘Dear Leader’ Cllr. Williams to tell an out right blatant lie; about which he only changed his mind because his friends started worrying about his health; which not only makes him a self confessed liar but also an unreliable double crosser
.
It may be difficult to pin ‘Dear Leader’ Cllr. Williams down on the same charge, but he could be accused of not standing for the rights of his members to express their views instead of obeying the whims of some obscure irrelevant pen unelected pen pusher within the NuLabour Party, so interfering with freedom of the press and people’s right to know the truth
.
Cllr. Williams has also proved to be a lousy leader because he gave a well paid top job to Keith Morrell, who within the party is not only well known for blowing hot and cold and unreliable but is also one of those who pretends to be on the left when it suits him but is contaminated due to his association with lowest form of political life the Liberal Democrats in Hampshire County Council (1993-97), when he with few others jumped in bed with them against Labour’s stated policy and against the democratic decision of Southampton Labour Party’s GMC
.
Describing this matter as NuLabour’s internal affair as some are trying to say is basically admission that what used to be the party of the working people has started to behave like Mafia. Because internal affairs in my experience is nothing more than NuLabour’s code for cover ups and hypocrisy.
.
When I provided documentary proof of how their former Cllr. Parvin Domani had abused the scarce resources of NHS for her political campaign, can any NuLabourite on this site tell us what action was taken against her? Was that also not covered under the heading of internal affairs of the Party?
.
If NuLabour is not hypocrite organisation of slippery slimy self serving opportunists, in which few decent people are marginalised but get paraded at election time to secure votes, then it should apply the same standards in Southampton which its national leadership is demanding from Cameron and co at national level.

Quite interesting,.... i always disputed what Cllr Smith did as council leader as to whether it was in the interest of the City and its residents or just to inflate his ego.
.
Is this in the interest of the City and its people or just for YOUR PERSONAL SATISFACTION
.
How does telling lies through their teeth and blocking press freedom and right of expression of elected members by some weird unelected party pen pusher compare with what may not be exactly a good record of Smith?
.
At least he was not caught with pants down like your 'Dear Leader' Williams and self confessed liar Keith Morell.

he was shown in the Levenson inquiry of using Legal advice on every move he took & had independent advisors so he could decide without bias.
Labour has just lost that vote.
He was not accused of lying by his own party but Labour wanted an inquiry to embarrass Cameron hoping to embarrass Cameron? It would have cost a lot of money after it was proven Hunt did everything by the book.
Maybe he shouldn't have been given that decision but he did it.
On here Labour supporters are saying why do we need to do this to Williams?
Well it has been stated by two of his own cabinet members he's a liar & he tried to cover it up by putting out a false statement( yet again) to the public.
This is far more blatantly obvious than Hunt so why is there double standards by the Local Labour Party & it's supporters?
If Williams was telling the truth why has Morrel not been chucked out of the Labour Party?
As for Southy he shouldn't make everything into the TUSC

Regarding who is telling the lies, you have to look no further than what Cllr. Keith Morrell has already admitted. That he agreed to tell a fib with ‘Dear Leader’ Cllr. Williams but then because of concern of his friends about his health mentioned in that lie he decided to come clean. Does that not make him a self confessed liar? Why are you trying to ignore that fact with your selective observation?
.
It is most unfair of you to tarnish my commitment to socialism by accusing me of spouting like a Tory supporter. It is a matter of public record that I have always opposed Tories, unlike many in NuLabour who are not only Closet Conservatives in action but in fact are former Tories and Liberals and often act with same instincts
.
Again another matter of public record; these days I am not politically active and as a socialist by instinct think it my duty to tell the TRUTH. Considering Labour was responsible for putting Mahatma Gandhi in prison, I can’t resist saying that it does not surprise me that English Socialists like you find it difficult to understand Gandhian value in me that Truth must be told, even if ones own mates are liars they must be exposed
.
Strangely none of you NuLabour supporters ever complain when I, despite my age and health spend my time and go out helping some NuLabour candidates, which may be some of the few decent and hard working people still in NuLabour. But you control freaks are always only too eager to start throwing the dummies out of prams if I do not tow NuLabour’s line
.
Regarding TUSC, no I am not their member never have been, YES I support them because I oppose cuts and in my opinion they are the only ones who are campaigning on that issue. Most members of TUSC are fully aware of my criticism and concerns about the styles of some of their campaigns and unlike control freaks of NuLabour organisers of TUSC do not complain
.
Your last remark does not deserve any reply because fact remains that unlike many in NuLabour I have been nothing other than a socialist whole of my life, in fact so were both of my parents. And just like them my loyalty will always be to the cause of socialism not to any tribe (which these days has become the core requirement of NuLabour) so I associate myself with all the left in small groups and in parties like Greens and even those who are still crucifying their conscience within NuLabour
.
By the way why have you not got the courage to post comments under your real name? Most of your comments are progressive, in my view it will enhance your credibility if you try to be yourself instead of becoming apologist for disgraceful self serving ego trippers in NuLabour like Morrell and Williams etc etc.
