PLANS to scrap GCSEs in favour of a return to Olevels could damage the prospects for Southampton’s children, the city’s new education boss has warned.

Cllr Sarah Bogle said Tory Education Secretary Michael Gove’s proposals to axe the qualifications within three years runs the risk of overloading schools already struggling to cope with a raft of changes.

The new Labour city council Cabinet member said: “Gove seems to be on permanent revolution mode. I don’t want to see Southampton children losing out from this throwback to the past.”

Having had 2 children go through Southampton State schools I would suggest our new shiny Education Boss puts more effort into giving our children an education and less into making Labour soundbites. Things change all the time - staying sane means being a judge of which directives you need, you have to implement and can be ignored.

Don't go back to O Level, just change GCSE to ASBO, then the majority of kids will be well qualified to get a job!

The purpose I believe is to improve standards. Seems very odd for Southampton to oppose this aim. And odder to cite school overload (whatever that means?) as the objection.
