Licensing regime to tackle rogue city landlords (From Daily Echo)

A good idea well done!

Similar schemes work well in other areas and if implemented properly could benefit the landlords by keeping a register so that bad tenants can be black listed or even traced in the event them doing a runner and it will ensure standards are kept up benefiting the tenants.

Great idea about time far to many dodgy landlords but theres loads of good ones as well i admit. How about a law making them keep the property in good condition rather than draging the whole area down as in parts of Swaythling. When did landlords care about the poor??

Did I get it right? £500 for five years? well thats £100 per year. If its three bedroom property, then its £8.33 per month or £2.77 per room pm? Or am I wrong here?

Most of these landlords have more than one property that is let.
£500 for a five years licence is a drop in the ocean compared to the amount of money they rake in.
It will only be the bad landlords that kick against this as to be registered, means that they will have to take responsibility for the property and the behaviour of the tennants that pay them good money.

This has been needed for years.

Typical bleating from slum landlords who think it is some kind of sin to spend even a tiny fraction of their profits on the upkeep of their homes and/or the safety of their tenants.

No good landlord ( of which there are many) will have a problem with this.

A City Council that's taking it's responsibility for housing in the City seriously at last.

I know a landlord that owns several rented properties and doesn't even live in UK. Raking in thousands a year of taxpayers money and spending it in his now, country of choice. This can't be right surely?

How much advice did you offer Southy when he spotted the chance to buy a cheap Council house before Margaret Thatcher introduced the policy to allow others to do so? Torchie now you are telling lies, you have been told many times, yes this house was bought for before Thatcher was PM in the 80's, and before the 80's council house was not cheap there was no discount nore was the houses cheaper than any where else in Southampton with the same design and the amount of land, this house cost just as much as the 3 bedroom houses in Parkside Ave.

Beat me to it, enhances experience for landlords and tenants! v. good value for money! this is an area which has previously been subject to a lot of 'grey areas' - people have been exploited and as pointed out landlords of HMO's are often raking it in.

I've bought an ex council house if the council are willing to pay me the value the estate agents have quoted I'd quite happily sell it back to them

i Don't people full understand what the problem is. First of all if you went knocking on many council house tenants door they will tell you that thier landlord the council does not invest enough money in keeping the property up to good standards i.e. damp
Second of all if a tenant has problems with landlord than they can go to council(health and safety) or solisitors(legal).
Third, Having let property to students in the past. i have had my property registered with uni and council. but when the students decide not to pay or show there council tax exemptcertificate. Niether council nor uni are interested.
Forth, if you saw they way some people live and treat others property than you would understand why some landlords do not upgrade their properties.

We currently live in an age where everybody wants to take from somebode else. if this scheme and the money really went into improving housing conditions and something the community could see and benifit from. like funding into sports project ect, i'd welcome it.

But this is more red tape to fill council pockets by a two faced landlord...

Proper inspections with properly trained inspectors. Not just box ticking.

Paramjit I was talking to an elderly resident of Erskine court who went to the meeting with Warwick Payne & Thomas & Morrell. Payne gave the other two an ultimatum back me or be sacked?
He then said he was shutting Erskine Court down.
Now this lady had voted Labour because they promised not to shut Erskine down she wasn't a Tory but she might be now as she said they(tories) never lied to us they said they would shut it & they kept to it Labour LIED
