A TEENAGER who was severely injured in a firework explosion had been given a talk on safety only days before the accident, it has emerged.

Joshua Gillot, aged 14, suffered severe injuries when the firework went off in his hand outside his home in Lower New Row, off City Road, Mosley Common.

Only the week before the accident the teenager was among pupils at Fred Longworth High School, Tyldesley, who were spoken to about fireworks safety by fire service officers.

Pupils were shown graphic slides of injuries caused by fireworks, including one of severe hand injuries similar to Joshua’s.

Deputy headteacher Pete Hodkinson said the school would continue to emphasise the safety message in the wake of the incident.

He said: “It has impacted on some of his friends and his year group. It’s a bad way of learning, but hopefully the message has got through and there will be no more injuries.”

Some of Joshua’s classmates are planning to visit him at Wythenshawe Hospital, where he is said to be recovering well after the explosion that happend at 12.30pm on Sunday, October 17.
