THE Jon Egging Trust’s Blue Skies programme has begun at MOD Boscombe Down.

The trust was set up in memory of Red Arrows pilot Jon Egging, pictured inset, who died when his jet crashed after a Red Arrows display at the 2011 Bournemouth Air Festival.

Eleven children, aged between 13 and 14, recently undertook one of nine sessions designed to inspire them to achieve their potential through a variety of lessons, exercises and motivational role models.

This year the youth engagement programme – Blue Skies – is expected to help 50 youngsters in Dorset, Norfolk and Lincolnshire.

Dr Emma Egging set up the charity following the death of her husband.

She said: “The aim of the scheme is to support young people who are underperforming to realise their full potential by connecting them with inspirational individuals and environments connected to aviation.

“Through these partnerships they gain a unique opportunity to build confidence, self-esteem and achieve accredited training in work and life skills.”

The children will participate in another seven sessions to complete the programme, of which three will be at MOD Boscombe Down.

They will also be taking part in two teamwork sessions led by Wessex Archaeology.

By the end they will have gained credits towards a BTEC in Work Skills.
