Eastleigh MP Chris Huhne speaks on hung parliament talks
10:47am Tuesday 11th May 2010 in News
Exclusive By Simon Carr, Eastleigh Chief Reporter
Liberal Democrats Chris Huhne (right) and Danny Alexander at the Cabinet Office as negotiations with the Conservatives continue
THE HAMPSHIRE MP at the heart of talks about the future of the country is staying tight-lipped on any possible deal.
Eastleigh MP Chris Huhne, has been involved in top-level talks about a Tory/Lib Dem pact and has spoken exclusively to the Daily Echo.
Mr Huhne is the Liberal Democrat homes affairs spokesman and was twice contender in the party leadership race and has been linked to possible posts as Transport Minister or Home Secretary.
Taking a brief break from negotiations he told the Daily Echo: "Good progress has been made in the talks although it has been very wearing and tired for all those involved.
"There are optimistic signs that a good agreement will be reached shortly that will be in the national interest."
However, he said he could not answer any questions about his future and rumours linking him and his colleagues to the centre of government.
He could also not be drawn on which party the Lib Dems favoured, any involvement he had in the negotiations with Labour or any remaining stumbling blocks.
He could also not comment on criticism from some quarters that his party is being two-faced by courting both major powers following the announcement yesterday that Prime Minister Gordon Brown will be stepping down.
Chris romped to victory in the general election last week with 24,966 votes, a massively increased majority of 3,864.

We have a party that has a higher number of seats than any other, and more votes, yet they may still not govern due to the constitution, hores trading and back room deals.
Which, I might add, could include having a second, unelected Prime Minister in a row.
Is about time the Queen stepped in to resolve this.

Lets hope it is the end of them.
It is far better to have a 2 party system as in America. It creates stable government and does away with all this behind door deals, that none of us voted for. Who wants to beholden to a small party big on presentation, but little on policy.
Look what happened in Southampton, when Liberals lead by Vinson shamefully did a deal with Labour just prior to the local elections - it finished their party and damaged Labour.
Look at the make up of SCC:
Conservative 28
Liberal 5
Labour 15
p.s. Welcome back Vinson - look forward to the beard grooming!

There were elections in Iraq in March, the result was inconclusive but Mr Allawi (a former PM) will be given the first opportunity to form a coalition government. Which reminds me, isn't this a good time for Tony Blair to come back as leader of the Labour party? I like Miliband but I thought that apart from being a bit of a poodle to Mr Bush, Tony didn't get much wrong.
I served in Iraq by the way if that counts for anything (probably not!)

Gosh, that one vote makes all the difference. I see it now, all the statistics will need a major revision - and your mate Tim will win after all.
Just get yourself into the real world for once southy – don’t make a fool of oneself. Yesterday you were trying to convince us these accurate voting figures were nothing but media exit polls – I notice you have dropped that line now, but without acknowledging your error. 1) a fairer voting system that allocates MPs according to the proportions voting for each party
2) a 100% elected second chamber
3) fixed term parliaments - and different terms for the first and second chambers.
4) doing away with all this "right honourable .. " language nonsense.
.
I take your point from the other day about PR and party lists. Yes, it does give too much power to the party machines - but then the AV system is only a slight improvement on first past the post and would still severely and adversely distort parliamentary representation of many a political view - including your own. At least with PR you vote for the political party of your beliefs and, if you pass a threshold, you get representation. With AV you still get only the big 2 or 3 parties - just like now.

I can't stand the smugness of David, but find Ed a cleaver and likable individual with a lot more political nous than his brother.
.
But, I will still never, ever, vote for then again because of their cowardice in not bringing down the criminal Blair before the blood from the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqi civilians stained their hands.
They are a party of moral cowards.
dont trust any of the labour party apart from the 4 socialist labour mp's that are in government, the rest of labour just treat them has the lesser of the evils

Happy days, Brown will resign as PM by the end of the day and Cameron will rightly assume power.
Come on your Reds!!!

freefinker wrote:no we do not, so far we had polling stations running out of voting slips, we had polling stations closing and turning away voters, we had a 14 year old boy that voted. complains are coming in of more polling stations closing up to 15 mins early.

What a shambles this whole thing is.
We have a party that has a higher number of seats than any other, and more votes, yet they may still not govern due to the constitution, hores trading and back room deals.
Which, I might add, could include having a second, unelected Prime Minister in a row.
Is about time the Queen stepped in to resolve this.
has for unelected prime minister it dont matter, what matters is people voting for the manifest, no wonder politics is in a mess if people vote on the person and not the manifest.
We DO KNOW where every single vote went.
We know precisely how many votes each party got EXACTLY - down to the very last vote.
So, stop this nonsense and get yourself informed for once.
this why the fix figures are publish a few mths after wards, to make sure there is no complaints and if theres any they can be investigated and to look into to see if a re-election is needed, any figures done by such has on the tv or raidio or news papers are pre-fix publish numbers, theres only one group that can publish the fix numbers, and before they will do that this group will recount all those votes again. if proven correct they will just put them in a box and store them for 50 years, any that are not correct get recounted 3 times more, and has long they get the same number 3 times then that would then become the fix number. all finding have to be reported to the crown commissioner's of electoral of fair play.
i could tell you some thing but i cant i have signed the secrets act, like dcm did and i am sure he knows what i would be pointing at.
so before you post again on the subject i will suggest that you join a political party and attend the places where they count up all the votes, maybe then you will have a better insight on how things works.
