Playing field disposal and obesity problem

I WAS interested to read in the Daily Echo that the council had sold off some of Bitterne Park School's playing fields.

I found it an unusual way of tackling the lack of activity of today's young people and their obesity problems.

This growing school is already on a tight site by today's standards.

    G M ANDREWS, Bitterne, Southampton.

Andrew Hind, head of infrastructure and capital projects, replies: "The decision was made by Southampton City Council on April 14. The land at Bitterne Park will be leased to a football company to provide community sports facilities. The land is not being sold. The school will be able to use the pitches during the day and the wider community will use it in the evenings and at weekends. This decision will help the battle against obesity, while providing facilities for the whole community."
