    No punishment

ALEX Winning was spot-on in his letter of April 25 condemning the Arts Council for giving inmates of Winchester Prison £10,000 to stage a play.

I thought a jail sentence was supposed to be a punishment. Why should prisoners get money to stage a play?

One of the prisoners featured in the BBC South Today report is in jail for being involved in a fight. He tried to kill me with a hammer and he knifed me. Why should these people be given such chances? This is another example of injustice. Maybe crime does pay.

    RICHARD McQUILLAN, Coxford, Southampton.
