A roasting for the Spit
I WAS extremely disgusted by the Echo item featuring headed High People Support April 30) listing Gordon Brown, John Hannides, and John Denham for the Spitfire mmeorial in Southampton.
It looks like a skeletal Spitfire upended on its tail,, obviously a crib from the Angel of the North which is a misnamer if ever there was.
The Southampton memorial is based on jealousy of Portsmouth's Spinnaker Tower.
Coincidently I visited Gunwharf Quay for the first time, only the day before the article appeared. Even in pouring rain the whole complex was very impressive.
Surely our high profile supporters have a soul! Our Spit of my own RAF wartime service was called a "she" such was the feeling we had of her beauty, quiet Merlin engine, smooth appearance in flight deserves more than a lump of scrapiron? Thus her sister Hurricame fighter I worked on both) was an "it" of course or even a "Hurribird"!
Come on now! A fullsized replica or actual "surplus" aircraft, on an underrcarriage and on a raised plinth, with "pilot" in the cockpit and a few ground crew plus our local Supermarine worker too. Set up why not?) on a green area midst of those proposed buildings on the ex-Vosper site. This might give Woolston the historical standing it surely needs.
ERNIE SEARS, Netley.
