Quad bikes at Fun Day
AN article appeared in the Daily Echo on May 2, headlined Backlash Over Quad Bike Ban at Fun Day.
As a team of people together, both the council and Fun Day management have been attempting to seek ways in which to overcome a legality relating to quad bikes on council property. Unfortunately, with time running out before this event on June 14, it will not be possible to complete the necessary paperwork required.
However, along with MP Dr Julian Lewis, we are lobbying the Government minister concerned, in an attempt to get the law changed so that we can use our discretion and wisdom for such eventualities in the future.
Totton and Eling Council voted after much deliberation 14 to 1 (four councillors were not at the meeting) in favour of not having quad bikes this year, but have also promised to seek a change in the law.
The Fun Day management worked with the council, and did not want in any way shape of form to be anything but above the law. Where did the story come from? What is the backlash?
There was clear misrepresentation in some of the quotes in the article, not giving a clear picture, indeed had the clear picture been given, there would have been no story.
One councillor, one opinion, a lone voice created this so-called backlash.
Reporter Chris Yandell took a small quote from the organisers of the event, without giving the end of the quote which was a different story.
We would like to categorically state that there is no backlash, the Fun Day is going ahead, bigger and better, and both the council and the Fun Day team have open doors of positive communication from which to build for next year.
DI BROOKS, chairman of Totton and Eling Town Council.
JOHN CUNNINGHAM, Fun Day management team.
