A SHIP ran aground and was stranded for six hours on an underwater bank in the Solent.

Nagato Reefer, a 135m cargo ship, became stuck on Shingles Bank, to the west of the Needles off the Isle of Wight, at about 2am this morning.

The vessel, which was carrying 20 crew members but no cargo at the time, was grounded for six hours and managed to escape just after 8am.

A spokesman for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said: “The coastguard was first contacted by Southampton Vessel Traffic Services just after 2am this morning.

“The 135m Nagato Reefer, with 20 crew on board, was not carrying any cargo at the time.

“There were no reports of damage, water ingress or pollution, and the vessel refloated just after 8am.”

In April this year, a crew member of the Nagato Reefer was injured when a lifeboat on the vessel fell and hit him on the head, when the ship was docked in Southampton.
