SOUTHAMPTON'S latest cruise ship was officially named in a spectacular ceremony.

But it was revealed she will only be based in Hampshire for one season.

Anthem will sail for a New York home in the autumn to be replaced again next summer by Independence of the Seas.

Named by Godmother Emma Wilby, a 27-year-old travel agent from Sunderland who won a nation- wide competition to perform the ceremony accompanied by Only Boys Aloud.

After naming the ship Emma performed pop star Katy Perry's hit song Fireworks.

"I am hugely excited to be taking on this role," said Emma.

"I know the role is about far more than singing at the launch. It's also about being an ambassador for the brand. I'm really honoured to have been chosen."

The ceremony included the Reading Scottish Pipe Band who performed the Star Spangled Banner and God Save The Queen.

After the bottle of champagne smashed against the Anthem's logo poolside on the ship, the night continued with the 1,300 invited guests enjoying live music, entertainment and dancing.

Stuart Leven, managing director of Royal Caribbean for the UK and Ireland, confirmed that next summer Independence of the Seas would return to Southampton, taking the place of Anthem who will be based in New York.

Daily Echo:

Joining Independence, who was also named in Southampton six years ago, will be Navigator of the Seas which had undergone a major recent refit.

"We know there is great affection for Independence in particular and already we have had great interest in her return to the British market," said Stuart.

" We have now reached the point where more of our British guests leave on ships elsewhere other than the UK but by returning Independence to Southampton we know this will prove popular."

The third Quantum class ship, Harmony of the Seas will enter service next year and be based in Barcelona.

Speaking of Anthem, Stuart said the team had been able to have more time to get to know the ship and he was particularly proud of the entertainment on board.

"We Will Rock You, the musical in our Royal Theatre is spectacular and Spectra's Cabaret in Two70 is incredible with the interaction between the performers and robotic screens.

"The interactive art we have on board is also sensational. The Heart Rate Chandelier that checks your pulse and the wooden mirror are designs to appeal to a younger generation. The aim remains to attract new to cruise guests which we believe Royal does well."

Anthem of the Seas set sail for a short naming cruise last night and leaves on Wednesday for her inaugural cruise to the Mediterranean.
