TELEVISION viewers across the country have had a unique chance to see behind the scenes of Southampton’s bustling port this month.

ABP Port of Southampton has been heavily featured in the latest series of Channel Patrol on BBC One, giving people a glimpse of the work that goes into moving giant containers and bringing huge ships into the port.

The port has maintained a strong presence in the series, with episode one showing the round-the-clock work of harbour patrol and tug teams to keep Hoegh Osaka in position and the port open for business after the vessel ran aground.

The programme documented the key role the teams played in the eventual refloating of the ship to bring it safely back into port.

The series has also followed engineers from DP World Southampton working against the clock to repair the fleet of straddle carriers and cranes that keep the flow of trade moving through the port and this week the programme went on board Solent Towage’s Phenix tug as it helped bring large oil tankers into the port.

Channel Patrol will be shown on BBC One until Friday and is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
