THE Sailors’ Society has reinstalled its giant collection globes at the port of Southampton’s busy cruise terminals, having collected nearly £3,000 from its previous haul.

The charity – which provides a personal lifeline for merchant seafarers on board and ashore and is the largest seafarers’ support charity in the world – has had a close relationship with the port since 1997.

It first installed collection globes in 2011 and removed them earlier this year, prior to Mayflower Terminal and City Cruise Terminal’s recent renovation works.

The globes are placed in the arrivals area of the terminals, in the hope that cruise passengers returning from their travels will donate any spare change. From pounds sterling to euros, US dollars to Thai baht, the globes will see an international mix of money which, in its previous four-year run, amounted to more than £2,800.

With the arrival of grand liners such as Britannia and Anthem of the Seas this cruise season, it is hoped that the thousands of passengers will dig deep.

Jan Webber, director of fundraising at the Sailors’ Society, said: “Over the last 18 years, ABP Southampton has donated an incredible £13,714 to our charity in total. We are extremely grateful for their continued support.

“The collection globes in the cruise terminals have been a lovely way to collect holidayers’ generous donations and we hope for another fruitful year.”
